Srinagar: The water level in the Jhelum river and its tributaries receded significantly on Wednesday as the weather improved in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said, adding the looming flood threat has decreased.

On Tuesday, a flood alert was sounded in Kashmir as Jhelum and other streams crossed the danger mark.

"Water level decreased and if the weather improves, Jhelum will start flowing at its normal levels soon," an official of the flood control department said.

The local meteorological department has forecast dry weather during the next two-three days.

It was a sunny, pleasant morning in Srinagar on Wednesday with the minimum temperature settling at 8.7 degrees Celsius. The Met office has forecast a clear day ahead.

"The maximum temperature would be around 22 degrees Celsius," a weather department official told IANS.

On Wednesday, the minimum temperature in Pahalgam was 2.2 degrees Celsius and two degrees Celsius in Gulmarg.

"The sky will remain generally cloudy in the Ladakh region," the weather office said.

Kargil and Leh towns in the Ladakh region recorded minus three degrees Celsius and minus 4.5 degrees Celsius respectively as the minimum temperature on Wednesday.

The minimum temperature in Jammu was 17.9 degrees Celsius.
