View of the road from nearby high rise buildings will be blocked for the Commonwealth Games 2010 cycling event

The 20-kilometer long Noida expressway is all set to go out of bounds and out of sight for the people living in nearby apartment complexes.

No, the road is not being blocked for some refurbishments instead it will be for the main holding the main cycling event in the Commonwealth Games next year.

Noida authorities along with the security advisors for the games reviewed the security for the event on Tuesday and decided to block the view of the road from the nearby buildings. Officials remain tight-lipped over how are they going to achieve the feat.

However, special arrangements will be made to accommodate spectators who will be allowed free entry.

Extensive security measures will be undm ertaken to ensure incident-free event. The meeting, which was also attended by Inspector General of Police (Meerut Zone) among others, decided to install CCTV cameras, metal detectors and automatic boom barriers to detect and stop subversive elements at the entry and exit points.

It was also decided to raise 15 makeshift watchtowers to keep an eye over the spectators as well as the main event.

Cycling would be the only event to be held in open on such a long stretch, which make it very sensitive from the security point of view.u00a0u00a0

Noida officials are quite confident about the arrangements pertaining to the venue, as most of them are makeshift or temporary in nature. "The spectator's gallery is temporary in nature and can be taken care of in the last hour. Moreover, the infrastructure is ready we just need to resurface it three months ahead of the race," said Sandeep Chandra, senior project engineer.

When will the event take place?
On the 10th day of CWG i.e 13th October 2010. The event will take place at two levels: the first between 10:30 am to 11:45 am and the other between 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The cyclists will be covering a 40 km stretch in the men's category and and a 30 km stretch in the women's category.

India's position in Cycling
From 1996 (London) to 2006 (Melbourne) India in Commonwealth Games has never secured a position.

Last year Mathew Hayman and Natalie Bates won gold for the men and women cycling respectively. Both are from Australia. In the competition, Australia has acquired maximum gold medals (165) followed by England (88), New Zealand (71) and Canada (44).

What is road time trial?
Cycling is an important part of athletics. It has three parts - racing, mountain trekking and road time trial. In road time trial all participants do not cycle at the same time. They cycle separately and the one who covers the distance in the shortest time is the winner.
