Noting the rising number of complaints against the drivers, transport department has decided to digitise all records; the process will start by the end of the month at Tardeo RTO

IF everything falls into place, then the time taken by the city’s Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to take action against unruly auto and taxi drivers would be cut down radically by the end of this month.

This change can be attributed to the transport department’s plans to digitise records such as permit and vehicle numbers, details of owner and driver and other information. A meeting was held between RTO and transport authorities last week regarding the same. The decision was taken to address the ever-increasing number of complaints against auto and taxi drivers in the city.

How it will work
Digitisation will help RTO officials act against drivers accused of unruly behaviour, suspected meter tampering or other offences, immediately after verifying the details of the vehicle number using the online data, upon receiving a complaint. Summons would then be issued to the registered address or the permit holder called and asked to visit the RTO personally.

In the present sysetm, RTO officials verify details of offenders manually, which is a time-consuming process. The action is initiated against a particular driver only when he visits the RTO for renewal of fitness certificate, licence or permits.“It is difficult to find exact details of a particular vehicle owner or a driver, as it is buried inside books. Digitisation means getting rid of time-consuming searches. It will make the process simple, as details will be available at the touch of our fingertips,” said an RTO official.u00a0

Sources working on this project claimed concrete plans were underway for all 48 RTOs in the state, and details of all taxis and auto drivers, along with private vehicle owners, would be a part of the project. The system would be first introduced at Tardeo RTO in the city, where over 60 per cent of taxis are registered.
