Dancing to new tunes

Choreographed weddings is the latest trend that is fast catching up with the capital's masses

You are attending the sangeet of this distant cousin and are shocked to see his dancing skills. His moves, the selection of songs and everything else is just so perfect that you too feel like imitating him.

A dance class in progress

Don't be dazed because what you just saw was the result of choreographed weddings, a new trend which is fast catching up with those getting 'arrested' for life. We recently visited one such academy that teaches dance to would-be couples and their relatives. We brought back some interesting notes. You might like to

Nach le vay
Wedding, besides being 'D'day for the groom and the bride, also means a lot of fun, music and dancing for everybody who has been invited. While traditional rituals still hold relevance as they used to
earlier, special attention is given to the sangeet ceremony to make the entire event glamorous.

That's the reason why about-to-wed couples and their relatives are taking professional help for the night. Kanhai's Institute of Performing Arts (KIPA) is one such place for wedding choreography. They will help you put on a polished show for your guests. Says Madhav, Chief Operating Officer, KIPA,u00a0u00a0 "The tradition of singing and dancing as a part of the wedding, sangeet and mehendi functions is rejoiced by one and all but not
everyone is comfortable with the typical Bollywood jhatkas, particularly those with two left feet.

A choreographed wedding dance can ease anxiety over dancing in front of a crowd. We discuss with the clients and help them compile the music and understand their style, and then accordingly construct the dance steps."
So now hiring people to learn dance for sangeet and mehndi is no longer associated with niche families but is more accessible to the masses as they provide special classes at their centres across the city and that too at very nominal prices.

Jazz by the way
Unlike traditional dances, different themes are becoming a part of the wedding dance sequence. Talking about the dancing styles and forms that people go for, Madhav says: "People are well aware of various international dance forms like salsa, jazz, waltz, tango, popping etc and wish to include them in their list of performances. This is the flavour of the season too."

So next time you see a groom doing Hip Hop or B-Boying just don't be surprised. Choreographed weddings are not just incredibly fun to watch for the guests but they also provide an outlet to showcase the personality of the newly married couple. So, if you are looking to add that little extra something to your wedding, you might want to join the bandwagon.
