Court asks illegal Delhi mosque to relocate

The Delhi High Court on Monday asked a charitable society, whose illegally built mosque was razed in Jangpura area of the city, to rebuild the structure on an alternative site given by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

The DDA razed the mosque early January, sparking protests by members of the community.

The DDA told the court that Noor Charitable Society, which ran the mosque, has been given 400 square metres of land just 100 metres away from where the previous structure stood.

Justice GS Sistani directed the society to immediately vacate the DDA land.

The court said that DDA has already constructed a boundary wall to repossess the plot. Therefore, the community should not offer prayer there anymore.

Earlier, the court allowed 10 members of the community to offer prayers in the compound till March 21.

The court was hearing a petition filed by advocate RK Saini of Jangpura Residents Welfare Association (RWA) against the encroachment of the DDA land. The court will now hear the case May.
