The body of three-year-old boy, Tejas Raju Sonar, who was pushed into the canal at the Dias plot slum near Swargate on Thursday was recovered by the fire brigade yesterday morning.

Tejas and his three cousins were allegedly thrown into the canal by Sangita Vilas Kiwde, a neighbour of their grandmother in Mukundnagar, on Thursday evening. Sonar's cousins were rescued by slumdwellers.

"We received a call at 9.30 am on Sunday morning and found the body stuck in the shrubs at a distance," said Shivaji Sawant, station duty officer of Hadapsar fire brigade.

He said that by 10 am the body was handed over to the Hadapsar police station, which handed it over to the Swargate police station.

"The body has been identified by the parents and we have booked the accused Kiwde for murder," said investigating officer Rajkumar Gaikwad.

The accused was questioned by the police and stated that since she did not have a son, she threw the boys into the water in a fit of jealousy.

The police suspect the case may also involve a monetary dispute. The police are yet to question Kiwde's husband.

"He is an auto rickshaw driver, and that is all we know about him," said Gaikwad. "Soon we will question him too."
