Pune city traffic police have identified 20 accident-prone spots on the Katraj-Dehuroad bypass stretch, which had recorded 111 fatal mishaps in the last three years.

Police have also analysed these locations and the measures required to prevent accidents there, and a report regarding this will soon be sent to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

The highway stretch of 34 kilometres from Kivale phata to Katraj new tunnel falls under the jurisdiction of city traffic police. A number of illegal ‘punctures’ on this stretch is the main reason behind the 111 fatal and 47 serious accidents, said DCP (Traffic) Vishwas Pandhare.

“The NHAI will have to ascertain which of these punctures at road dividers are legally permitted, and which ones are not. They will also have to make provisions for safe vehicle halting while crossing the road at these spots, and also segregating the service roads and main highway,” Pandhare said.

“We have suggested various preventive safety measures like installing reflectors, rumbling strips, information boards, constructing pedestrian underpass, increasing the height of road dividers, and closing down illegal punctures,” he added.u00a0
