The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) may soon allocate a separate space to all women councillors working with the civic agency. This will be the first in the history of the agency as the raj-era town hall did not allow them enough space to relax.

Deputy Chairperson of MCD Standing Committee Sarita Chaudhary is planning to raise the demand for a separate common room for women councillors at the newly-built civic centre building with the Municipal Commissioner.

"We have been raising the issue for the last three years regarding a separate common room. We hope that this time they act on our request. The Town Hall did not have the enough space to give us a common room," said Chaudhary.

Other councillors too are happy with the development. "It will be great to have a common room for women councillors. We will be able to relax accordingly. The committee should approve it," said Dr Beena Sharma, a Congress councillor.

Shifting ground

The 28-storey, 112-metre high Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre, which will house all main MCD offices and deliberative wing under one roof, was inaugurated in April last year. However, the civic body is yet to fully shift to its new headquarters.
