Palghar woman killed after SUV hits her, locals attack vehicle; accused held

A 60-year-old lady labourer died in an accident in Maharashtra's Palghar district after being hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV). Following the accident, irate locals vandalised the vehicle and beat the occupants, resulting in their detention, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening on Satpala-Rajodi Road in the Vasai neighbourhood. The deceased, from Murbad in Thane district, was walking home with a coworker when a speeding SUV struck her, killing her, according to an Arnala Sagri police official, reported PTI. According to the report, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the collision.


When the locals learned about the accident, they paced to the scene, pelted stones at the SUV and smashed its windscreen and glass with rods. They also detained and physically assaulted the vehicle's two occupants, the report added. 


According to the PTI report, a video of the aftermath of the attack on the car went viral on social media networks. 


The cops responded quickly to the incident, arrived on the scene and arrested the two SUV passengers. 

Concurrently, the woman's body was then brought to a government hospital for a postmortem examination and the irate residents dispersed ending the tension, the cops told PTI.

According to an official statement, a state transport bus carrying around 45 passengers narrowly spared a calamity when it caught fire in Thane, Maharashtra, early Sunday morning, stated a report in PTI. 

According to the agency report, Yasin Tadvi, the chief of Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell, reported that the event occurred at 8:18 a.m. near Vitawa Bridge, close to Kalwa police station.

The bus, operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), was travelling from Khopat bus depot to Pali in Raigad district when its engine caught fire, the report added. 

Th PTI report added that a police constable's prompt response resulted in the disaster management cell being immediately alerted. Local firefighters and the crisis management team responded quickly, ensuring that all passengers were safely evacuated from the bus. Fortunately, there were no injuries among the passengers.

By 8:28 am, the fire had been brought under control, but it had caused some damage to the bus. An inquiry into the cause of the fire is now underway, the PTI report added.
