Diwali seems to have come early for resident doctors at Sir JJ Hospital. The dean held an emergency meeting with PWD and ordered immediate renovation of the shabby quarters they were living in.

While resident doctors are considered the backbone of healthcare in hospitals, JJ Hospital resident doctors were forced to live in rooms with collapsing infrastructure. They said ceilings are peeling off and leakages are showing up on walls for the last three months.

“In many rooms, plaster blocks as long as 5-6 inches are peeling off. We can get hurt. There is an immediate need for repairs,” said a resident doctor, who stays in the BMS quarters, a two-storey building with 16 rooms which houses around 150 resident doctors. The story of other hostel facilities inside the campus is the same.Residents doctors said the hostels are in bad shape and need immediate repair works.

The doctors also pointed out that bathroom floors have cracks, through which water seeps in. “This is quite a dangerous situation as it will loosen the soil beneath and endanger the building,” said the doctor. The doctors had earlier approached the engineering department but didn’t get a positive response, following which they approached the dean who held a meeting on the issue on Tuesday.

Dean Dr Ranjit Mankeshwar said the repair work will start immediately. “We had a joint meeting with the PWD and representatives of resident doctors. The renovation work shall commence immediately and be completed on priority basis,” he said.
