An 8-months pregnant woman died in Mulund’s Veer Savarkar Municipal Hospital in the wee hours of Tuesday. Her family has alleged negligence, claiming there were no doctors at the Shrimati S J Dosa Chachani Maternity Hospital at MG Road (Mulund), where she had been admitted before being shifted to the municipal hospital.

Nisha Kasabe, 26, a resident of Mulund, was admitted to the Chachani maternity hospital and shifted to Savarkar hospital by the staff. Her family claimed there was no doctor at the maternity hospital after 4pm and her health deteriorated rapidly.

“On Sunday she had joints pain. When we went to Chachani maternity hospital, they asked us to go to MT Agarwal Hospital. But as they didn’t admit my wife there, we came back to the maternity home. They gave her medicines and asked us to go home as we hadn’t done a Covid-19 test” said Nitin Kasabe, Nisha’s husband, who is a daily wage earner. They have a three and half year old son.

On Monday Nisha complained of joints pain and fever, so her family rushed her to the Chachani maternity hospital where she was admitted in the afternoon. “She was given medicine and saline water intravenously. I gave her fruit juice and some food in the evening and went home. At 2.30am, I received a phone call from the hospital that her condition had deteriorated and she was being shifted to Veer Savarkar Hospital at Mulund (E),” he added.

‘Staff had no answers’

He claimed within an hour, Nisha was declared dead by doctors. He said he will approach the police on Wednesday. “When we inquired what happened to her and how her health deteriorated rapidly, staff at the maternity hospital didn’t have answers. What is shocking is that there was no doctor in the hospital from 4pm,” said Vishal Kasabe, brother-in-law of Nisha. “When we inquired, we were told, it’s an everyday thing and if a patient gets serious, staff calls up relatives and asks them to shift the patient to another hospital,” he added.

‘Will approach the police’

Mihir Kotecha, member of the legislative assembly, Mulund, demanded a police investigation into the matter. “Everyday from 4pm till the next morning 9am, there is no doctor at the maternity hospital. The hospital is manned by one nurse and ward boy. Officials claim they shifted the woman to Savarkar Hospital, but it’s the same story there. They also don’t have adequate staff. I will write to the Additional Municipal Commissioner and Mulund police to take departmental as well as criminal action in this case,” said Kotecha.

When this reporter visited the maternity hospital at 5 pm on Tuesday, there were no doctors available. When asked about the staff, the security personnel said everyone leaves after 4pm. Medical Officer of Chachani maternity hospital, Dr Vaishali Chandanshive, refused to talk. Calls to Executive Health officer Dr Mangala Gomare remained unanswered.
