Absolute clarity on fighting terror, S Jaishankar states during Mumbai visit

Union Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, held forth at a crisp 'n' crackling press conference, at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Dadar East on Sunday morning. The minister said at the outset, “I am here in Mumbai for the first time post-elections. Then, and even now, the focus was on Viksit Bharat, and today, there is a focus on Viksit Maharashtra too.” Jaishankar emphasised how Maharashtra was hugely important on the development agenda, “the leading state” and that is why he claimed, “it helps if the state and central governments are on the same page”. Touting double engine growth, the minister sharing the dais with BJP leader Ashish Shelar highlighted the number of foreign leaders who have been here of late and added that the talent here must become employable. “We see the world has become a global workplace which means our people can go overseas for their livelihood or for specific projects too.” Secure borders With opening statements centred on development and a poll pitch for the BJP for the November 20 Assembly elections, Jaishankar went on to topics like border security and countering terrorism. Taking questions about illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, Jaishankar said, “We have witnessed what happened in Bangladesh recently. The Modi Sarkar has no doubt that it will do whatever is necessary to secure our borders. This is not just with reference to Bangladesh but also Myanmar. There was a line of thinking earlier that we are a democracy… let people come in. That thinking finished in 2014.” To a question regarding accusations that big-ticket projects are moving out of Maharashtra to favour Gujarat, which is the perception by some, the minister’s reply was that investors are their own people, capable of thinking on their own and making their own decisions. He said, “There are investors who look at the scenario… they make their own calculations. They will not just go by what you or anybody says.” Jaishankar pointed to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) project which aims to create a comprehensive transportation network of rail, road and sea routes, connecting India, the Middle East and Europe. He said, “Currently, it is the most talked about corridor and its main India interface is Maharashtra,” he asserted. Combating terror In response to a question on terrorism, Jaishankar said, “Mumbai is a symbol of counterterrorism, both nationally and globally.” He claimed that people know who is standing strong against terrorism and said there was no room for any grey area when it came to fighting terror. “We are seen as leaders in fighting terror. Yet, I reiterate that there should be absolute clarity when it comes to terror. We need to have a response when it comes to terror attacks. Post the 26/11 (2008) terror attacks in Mumbai for instance, there was no response. This will not happen today. We need to respond.” On terrorism in Kashmir, the minister pointed to two aspects saying the fight against terror continues but it is also about integrating Kashmir. “To have a free and fair election there, with a 60+ per cent turnout, is a very big statement. Who won that election is secondary. I will say that India won that day. It also confirmed support for the removal of Article 370,” he added. As the interactive session wound up, Jaishankar was asked a question about problems still simmering in Manipur. “There are problems. We are a democracy… it is never going to be perfect. Yet, you cannot damage India's image in the name of Manipur. That I think is an anti-national agenda,” was the final note of the some poll, some frank bol cracker of a pre-Diwali Jaishankar-esque meet.

LoP Rahul Gandhi says Bandra stampede an example of 'crumbling infrastructure'

Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday, October 27, described the Bandra stampede as an example of "India's crumbling infrastructure," asserting that the country requires "international-class infrastructure." "Inaugurations and publicity hold value only when backed by a foundation that genuinely serves the public. When lives are lost, and bridges, platforms, or statues collapse after ribbon-cutting ceremonies due to poor maintenance and neglect of public property, it raises serious concerns," Rahul Gandhi posted on X. He also highlighted the Balasore train accident that claimed 300 lives last year, to state his point. "The Balasore train accident in June last year claimed 300 lives, yet instead of compensating the victims, the BJP government has embroiled them in lengthy legal battles. Just think—when even the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed within just nine months, it clearly indicates that the intent was merely publicity, with no respect for Shivaji Maharaj or concern for public safety," the Leader of the Opposition stated. "Today, the nation needs world-class infrastructure that also addresses the local needs of the poor—facilitating business, easing travel, and ensuring safety," he added. According to news agency ANI, Gandhi further stated that India is "capable and competent", requiring only an "effective and transparent system" dedicated to public service and building a strong future for the country. Meanwhile, Dr Sushil, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Bhabha Hospital, reported that 10 people were injured in the Bandra stampede incident. Of these, five were admitted, three were discharged, and two with serious injuries were transferred to KEM Hospital for further treatment. The stampede occurred on Platform 1 after a crowd gathered for the Bandra-Gorakhpur Express. Earlier, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) spokesperson Anand Dubey criticised the Mahayuti government, and said that the "value of life has diminished" in Maharashtra. He added that Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who also serves as the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Maharashtra in-charge, holds no accountability for public safety. Meanwhile, speaking about the Bandra stampede incident, Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Vineet Abhishek said, "Early this morning at Bandra Terminus, as the Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express, scheduled for 5.15 am, arrived at the platform, some passengers attempted to board while it was still moving. Two passengers were injured and taken to hospital by railway staff. Western Railway ensures trains arrive two-three hours before departure during festive periods." Abhishek added that the railways have set up additional ticket counters, deployed adequate Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and ticket-checking staff, and prioritised safe boarding procedures. "Despite our efforts, this unfortunate incident occurred. Western and Central Railways have issued 2,300 notifications for additional trains. Extra counters, sufficient staff, and multiple information channels are in place to ensure smooth operations during the festive season," he said. (With ANI inputs)

Bandra stampede: Railways imposes platform ticket sale curbs to control crowding

The Central Railway (CR) announced on Sunday, October 27, that it has imposed a temporary restriction on the sale of platform tickets at major stations to mitigate crowding during the festival season. This decision comes hours after 10 people were injured at Western Railway's (WR) Bandra Terminus in Mumbai while attempting to board a train to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, news agency PTI stated. The Bandra stampede incident occurred at 2.45 am when passengers tried to enter the unreserved Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express as it was arriving on platform number 1 from the yard ahead of its scheduled departure at 5.10 am. Videos of the chaotic scene at Bandra Terminus went viral on social media. In a press release issued later that day, CR stated that the platform ticket sale restrictions will be enforced at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Dadar, Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Thane, Kalyan, Pune, and Nagpur stations with immediate effect. Meanwhile, WR announced that platform ticket sales will be restricted until November 8 at Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra Terminus, Borivali, Vasai Road, Vapi, Valsad, Udhna, and Surat stations. "The restrictions imposed aim to manage anticipated crowding during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath Puja festive season and will remain in place until November 8. This step is intended to facilitate smooth passenger movement within station premises," stated an official. The official also noted that senior citizens and those with medical needs are exempt from these restrictions, urging all passengers to adhere to the new regulations for a safe and pleasant travel experience during the festive period. In another announcement, CR indicated that it would operate two additional unreserved trains between CSMT and Gorakhpur to accommodate the increased passenger rush during Diwali and Chhath. This will bring the total number of services planned or operated for these two festivals to 583, reported PTI. The details of the trains are as follows: The 01019 unreserved special train will depart from CSMT Mumbai at 2.30 PM on Monday, October 28, and is scheduled to arrive in Gorakhpur at 11 pm the following day. Bandra stampede: Opposition slams government over 'lack of passenger safety'

Maharashtra State President of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), Jayant Patil, has strongly condemned the stampede that occurred at Mumbai's Bandra Terminus. Patil highlighted that such incidents represent a significant concern for public safety in the state. Criticising the state government during his remarks on Sunday, October 27, Patil stated, "The government has failed to make proper arrangements. Incidents like this are becoming alarmingly frequent, which is extremely worrying. We unequivocally condemn the tragic event at Bandra." Ten passengers were injured in the Bandra stampede incident that took place on platform number 1, where a crowd had gathered for a Gorakhpur-bound train. According to news agency ANI, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) spokesperson Anand Dubey also expressed his discontent with the Mahayuti government, asserting that the value of human life appears to have "diminished" in Maharashtra. He pointed out that Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who is also the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Maharashtra in-charge, has failed to take responsibility for the safety of ordinary citizens. "There is a shocking lack of regard for the lives of common and impoverished people under this government. More than nine individuals have been injured. Where is the accountability from the railways or the minister? He seems more focused on ensuring BJP's success in Maharashtra's elections than on public safety," said Dubey. Describing the incident as 'disturbing,' Clyde Crasto, another leader of NCP (SP), stated, "The stampede at Bandra Terminus is extremely concerning. It underscores the failures within the Railways Ministry under Ashwini Vaishnaw. The lack of sufficient trains during the festive season, coupled with lapses in local administration, has contributed to this unfortunate incident." 'Additional railway staff, police personnel deployed at Bandra Terminus' Meanwhile, speaking about the Bandra stampede, Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek said, "Early this morning at Bandra Terminus, as the Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyoday Express, scheduled to depart at 5.15 am, was being brought to the platform, some passengers attempted to board while the train was still in motion. This led to two passengers sustaining injuries. They were promptly taken to hospital by the railway staff. During festive periods, Western Railway ensures that trains arrive two-three hours before departure." According to ANI, Abhishek also mentioned that the railways has opened additional ticket counters and deployed adequate number of Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and ticket-checking staff to prioritise safe boarding procedures. "Despite our best efforts, this unfortunate incident occurred. Both Western and Central Railway have issued 2,300 notifications regarding additional trains. We have established extra counters, ensured the presence of adequate staff, and set up multiple information channels to facilitate smooth operations during the festive season," he added. Jaishankar on 26/11 terror attacks: India will not remain silent again

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar remarked on Sunday that India failed to respond effectively to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, asserting that any similar incident in the future would be met with a decisive response. Jaishankar emphasised, “We should not have a repeat of what happened in Mumbai. That there was a terror attack and there was no response.” He described Mumbai as a symbol of counter-terrorism for both India and the world. The minister recalled that during India's tenure on the UN Security Council, the country chaired the counter-terrorism committee and held a meeting in the very hotel that was attacked in 2008. He expressed confidence in India’s growing reputation as a leader in combating terrorism. “People know that India is standing strong against terrorism,” Jaishankar said, reinforcing that the nation has adopted a stance of zero tolerance towards terrorist activities. “When we talk of zero tolerance against terror, it is clear that when somebody does something, there will be a response,” he added. Jaishankar underscored the need to expose the duality of those who conduct business by day while engaging in terrorism by night. “I have to pretend that everything is okay. This India will not accept. This is what has changed,” he stated. He affirmed that the government would not only expose terrorism but also take action where necessary. In addition to discussing counter-terrorism measures, Jaishankar addressed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, noting that both countries are set to resume patrolling in Ladakh. “We expect to return to pre-October 31, 2020, patrolling arrangements in areas like Demchok and Depsang. This will take some time,” he explained. The remarks from Jaishankar come at a time when national security is a top priority for the Indian government, highlighting a renewed commitment to tackle threats from terrorism and ensure the safety of its citizens. According to PTI reports, the emphasis on a robust response strategy signals a shift in India's approach to national security and counter-terrorism, reinforcing the message that the nation will not stand idle in the face of violence. Sanjay Raut questions railway minister's accountability after Bandra stampede

On Sunday, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut raised serious concerns regarding the accountability of the Railway Minister following a stampede at Mumbai's Bandra railway station that left nine passengers injured. This incident has reignited discussions about railway safety under the current government. Raut pointed out that since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government began its third term, there have been over 25 significant railway accidents across the country, resulting in more than 100 fatalities. He expressed frustration at what he perceives as a lack of accountability for these tragic incidents. "Since the Modi government has taken power for the third term, and with the railway minister at the helm again, we have seen more than 25 major railway accidents occurring, claiming over 100 lives," he stated while addressing reporters. In his critique, Raut did not hold back in questioning the efficacy of the government's plans for modernising railway infrastructure. He specifically targeted Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport and Highways, saying, "You talk about bullet trains, metros, and high-speed trains, while Nitin Gadkari suggests running buses in the air. But what is the reality on the ground?" This remark highlights a growing frustration among political leaders about the perceived disconnect between government promises and the actual state of railway safety. The stampede at Bandra station occurred early Sunday morning on platform number one, where a large crowd had gathered for the Bandra-Gorakhpur Express. The rush of passengers resulted in the unfortunate incident, leading to injuries among several individuals. According to reports from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the injured were promptly transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment. Local authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the stampede. Raut's comments reflect a broader concern regarding passenger safety and the urgent need for systemic changes within the Indian railway network. As investigations into the stampede continue, questions linger about the responsibilities of those in charge of ensuring safe travel for millions of commuters across the country. Further details regarding the condition of the injured passengers and the circumstances surrounding the stampede are expected to emerge in the coming days, according to ANI reports.   (With inputs from ANI)

People have not met him, Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects remain incomplete, and the BDD Chawl redevelopment, which was supposed to allocate housing via a lottery, is marred by corruption. No development work has been carried out in the chawls, hospitals lack ICUs, and Worli still has no private schools." He added that Aaditya only appears during election season. The Maharashtra Elections 2024 will take place on November 20, with vote counting set for November 23 across all 288 constituencies. In the 2019 Assembly elections, BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena 56, and Congress 44. Shelar said that he was not opposing Sena’s candidate Sada Sarvankar, explaining that since Raj’s son is a Hindutva advocate and maintains a cordial bond with Mahayuti, the ruling alliance should reciprocate too. “I feel that Mahayuti should support Amit, who is our family. I will meet CM Eknath Shinde, deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar in this regard,” he told media persons on Saturday.
