How a bold turkey helped find its stolen mate

Its owner took it outside the suspect thief’s house in Bandra and when it called, the stolen female bird answered

The whereabouts of a stolen turkey were discovered the day after, thanks to its intelligent owner. The Bandra resident took its mate with her outside the suspect thief’s house, and when the bird clucked, the stolen female bird answered from inside. Thus the avian theft was solved in a cluck... a few clucks actually, and the woman rushed to the police station with this sound evidence. While the police registered an FIR against the suspect thief, the stolen turkey was returned by the time the complainant went home.

Fowl intentions

The complainant, Wendy D’Souza, 58, stays at Rebello Road at Bandra West with her husband Victor and brother Medroy. The D’Souza family were given a pair of turkeys, a male and a female, by their relatives a few months back. The family has kept them as pets for the past 4-5 months. However, on June 2, the female turkey went missing. 

According to the police, the D’Souzas searched for the turkey in the area but failed to find it. However, a neighbour called Wendy and told her that the hen had been stolen by Mustafa Ansari, 40, a resident of Bandstand at Bandra West.

The D’Souza family registered an FIR against Ansari. With the help of locals, Wendy found Ansari’s address and decided to go there. She took the male turkey - the gobbler - with her.

A police officer from the Bandra police station said, “Outside the suspect’s house, the gobbler began clucking. After hearing her partner’s call, the hen responded loudly. The D’Souza family rushed to the Bandra police station and revealed what had happened, to us. We called Ansari to the police station. But meanwhile the stolen turkey was returned to the D’Souza’s house.”

A police officer said, “We have registered a case of theft under Section 379 (theft) against the suspected accused, Mustafa Ansari, a resident of Bandstand and started investigation. The turkey was found by the complainant at their house a day after it was stolen. We are checking the accused's involvement in the theft. The turkey is fit and fine and has been reunited with the D’Souza family.”
