Two bike-borne persons allegedly opened fire on former Malegaon mayor Abdul Malik near a petrol pump in Maharashtra's Nashik district on Monday, police officials said. According to the police official's statement to PTI, the incident happened early on Monday.

The officials told the news agency that Malik, who sustained injuries in the incident, was sent to a neighbouring hospital and that his condition was now stable.

Per the PTI report, an official from the Malegaon city police stated that the incident happened at 1.20 am as Malik was seated outside a shop on Old Agra Road.

The report stated that two unidentified persons arrived on a motorbike and fired three shots at Malik and the latter sustained wounds to his chest and leg. According to authorities, he was brought to a hospital and is currently recovering.

The police have filed a case against the two unidentified individuals under applicable Indian Penal Code sections, including 307 (attempt to murder). The officer went on to say that further inquiry is underway, the PTI report stated.

In another unrelated incident, two from Mumbai were convicted in a 2018 murder case of a salon worker. According to another PTI report, the sessions court in Mumbai convicted two former staffers of a salon for killing their 28-year-old colleague Kriti Vyas. According to the report, Vyas went missing in 2018 and her body was not found.

The report stated that Additional Sessions Judge MG Deshpande held the two accused--Siddhesh Tamhankar and Khushi Sahjwani--guilty of charges under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code. However, the quantum of their punishment will be announced on Tuesday.

The PTI report stated that the two accused, who were an account executive and account manager at a salon chain in Andheri, reported to Vyas; she had issued them a memo for not working properly resulting in her killing.

The case was initially probed by the Mumbai Police and was later transferred to the crime branch. The Crime Branch sleuths, after taking over the probe, made the two arrests.
