Local trains in Mumbai are being installed with hi-tech dashcams that will help authorities capture trespassing, suicides and keep a tab on drivers’ behaviour. The information can be used to check accidents and boost services, said officials.

The audio recording will act as the train’s “black box”, an official said, adding that Rs 2.5 crore had been allocated for the project.

The system has an additional feature of recording technical snags if reported on the train.

In September 2020, mid-day had reported how dashcams on local trains would be a helpful feature given the number of track crossings, suicides and train mishaps are reported daily.

The system will use traction technology to withstand shock and vibrations as trains clock 80-100kmph on the suburban section, said sources. The presence of cameras will deter train drivers from using mobile phones while driving as all happenings inside the cabin will be recorded.

The CCTV cameras installed on the front of the train will help ascertain the cause of accidents, including those related to tracks. The recordings will be retained in the system for a specific period of time in case an inquiry is ordered to investigate untoward incidents, said sources.

Western Railway officials said they have already installed the dashcams on 25 locals. “Installation in more 113 local rakes is under process and we shall complete it by December 2022,” Sumit Thakur, WR’s chief public relations officer, said.

CR’s chief PRO Shivaji Sutar said, “CR has 161 local trains, and so far, three trains already have the recording system. The process of getting sanctioning in other trains is under process.”
