Following MiD DAY's report on the fire brigade's rescue operation for a kitten, the animal activist forum to acknowledge the deed.

After reading MiD DAY's report ('Trunk call to save kitty', February 2) about how the Mumbai Fire Brigade toiled for over three hours to save a kitten in distress, functionaries from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PeTA) have decided to honour the brigade with an award.u00a0

This kitten was rescued from a tree in Sion last week

Last week, the Fire Brigade came to the rescue of a scared kitten, which got stuck in the hollow of a tree at Champaklal Industrial Estate in Sion (E).

Six members of the crew worked diligently, cutting holes into the tree and trying to reach the kitten for more than three hours, but the fearful feline evaded rescuers by moving up and down the inside of the trunk.

The crew then used a camera to gauge the exact location of the kitten. As one firefighter cut a hole into the base of the tree, the kitten raced out another.

The fire brigade will receive a Hero to Animals Award from PeTA, India.

"Through sheer persistence and determination, the members of Mumbai Fire Brigade helped this kitten escape a dangerous situation that could have led to injury or death," said the PeTA India Chief Functionary, Poorva Joshipura.

"We know that the brigade's compassionate actions will inspire others to intervene when they see an animal in distress," she added.

The brigade would receive a framed certificate and a letter of appreciation.
