The highest number of cases registered at Sion police station have to do with theft of sound systems from cars. But since police officials have successfully arrested two accused, the number of complaints has tapered to zero.

On July 26, the police patrolling team arrested the accused identified as Basu Jagdish Chavan (30) and Jagannath Kale (23) and since their arrests, no complaints in connection to theft of music players in four-wheelers have been registered at the station.

An officer from Sion police station said, “The two accused used to break car locks in wee hours, rob the players and sell them in Chor Bazaar. During night patrolling, when our police team, consisting of Sub-Inspector Amrut Pawar and constables Y B Malve, Rajesh Sawant, Sachin Patil, Surkant Mohite and Rausahed Dahate, was on a round in our jurisdiction, they noticed a bike riding by with two suspicious-looking people.”

The police team started following them. When the duo realised they were being tailed they tried to escape. But a team stationed at Sion Junction stopped the two by toppling them with a stick. After falling, Kale scurried away but Chavan was nabbed, and questioned right there.

The officer added, “After on-the-spot interrogations we learnt that the two were car tape thieves. Chavan disclosed where his accomplice stayed, after which a team was dispatched to Reay Road and Kale was arrested.”

The two accused have been booked under sections 379 (theft) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50) of the Indian Penal Code. They are in police custody.

The officer said that car tape theft cases had been registered with several police stations across the city, and the Sion policemen were trying to take charge of the duo to probe the cases registered at their station.

Officials also said that with the arrest of the duo they detected nine cases of car tape thefts and recovered 13 systems, but the accused did not admit to committing the remaining thefts.u00a0
