Mumbai: Maharashtra Government is awaiting formal communication from the Centre regarding the arrest of gangster Chhota Rajan in Indonesia, a senior Home Department official said today.

"We have not received any authentic information/ instruction from the Centre as yet (regarding Rajan's arrest). Will act promptly if and when asked to do so by the Centre," Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K P Bakshi told PTI.

Yesterday, a Home Department official said the state government will compile a list of cases in which the 55-year- old underworld don is wanted in Mumbai so that he can be tried in the court of law here.

"Right now, the Chhota Rajan issue is with Union Home Ministry since it is a matter between two countries. The state government will come into picture only when he is brought to India," he had said.

Rajan, one of India's most wanted criminals who has been on the run for nearly two decades, was arrested in Bali, Indonesia two days ago.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde had yesterday said the state would request the Centre to allow Rajan to be taken to Mumbai after he is deported to India.

Born in Mumbai, Rajan is wanted in multiple cases, including murder and possession and use of illegal firearms. In September 2000, there was an attempt on his life when terrorist and his once-time boss Dawood Ibrahim's men tracked him down to a hotel in Bangkok but he managed to escape with injuries.
