Locals allege extra floors were illegally added to the building

At least 11 persons sustained minor injuries when a 30-year-old two-storey house in Dharavi's transit camp partially collapsed on them early this morning.

All of those injured were asleep at the time. It is not known how many more were in the house.

The fire brigade was immediately pressed into service to clear the debris.

An official from the disaster management cell of the BMC said those injured were treated at Sion Hospital.

Civic officials suspected that the building was dilapidated, but locals alleged that the inmates of the house had added more floors, thereby weakening the structure.

Ramakant Biradar, assistant municipal commissioner of G-North ward, said, “The building will be taken up for redevelopment soon.”

On the locals' allegation of unauthorised construction, he said, “Buildings in this area are very old. There is no possibility of an irregularity.”
