From Churchgate to Borivli, the city’s ATMs ran dry during yesterday’s bank holiday, despite the government’s efforts to reduce citizens’ cash woes. “Most of the banks like Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, State Bank of India are closed. ICICI Bank is open but there is no cash left after they had an exhaustive afternoon with hundreds of customers,” said Deven Lad, from Fort.

When Shayan Ghosh, who works at Nariman Point, tried withdrawing cash in the evening by 7, all the ATMs like CITI, HDFC, BOI were cashless. “I had last withdrawn money on Friday. I might probably go again in the evening tomorrow at the Union Bank’s head office, as that’s where I got money the last time.” In Bandra East, a similar situation prevailed for a mid-day correspondent when they tried withdrawing money at the HDFC Bank ATM. The machine ran out of cash with five customers to go. About 40 customers had to go home empty handed.

Even in Borivli, the situation remained the same. Rajesh Shah, who was working till 9 pm said, “I did not get time to withdraw money in the afternoon and now all the ATMs I’m going to are cashless.”
