The Nagpada police have arrested a man, who used to steal bikes from his acquaintances, including his brother, and later call them up demanding a cash reward for providing information about their bikes.

The accused, Mehraj Qureshi, a resident of Madanpura in Byculla, was nabbed on Friday after police laid a trap for him. Police said a person named Aslam Qureshi had approached them, stating that his motorcycle had gone missing from his home a fortnight ago. Aslam told the cops that after a few days he received a call on his phone from an unknown person who promised him vital information of his stolen vehicle. The person demanded Rs 10,000 for his services.

“We asked Aslam to call the person and tell him he was ready to give him the money. After the date and time was fixed, we laid a trap and nabbed the accused,” said Jalinder Ramnani, inspector of the Nagpada police station.

Aslam, however, got the shock of his life when he realised that the thief was none other than his younger brother Mehraj. The Nagpada police also recovered another bike from the possession of the accused, which he had stolen from one of his neighbours earlier. “His method was simple; he used to rob bikes of someone he knew and then park it in the parking lot of any building. He would then call up the victim, promising them information for a reward. After reaching an agreement, he would tip them off on the location of the bike,” said Ramnani.
