Union Minister of State (Home Affairs) Kiren Rijiju presented the award to Gupta in a glittering extravaganza at a star-studded event. The IAA recognises excellence and leadership in the fields of marketing, advertising and media.

“I want to thank the IAA for the award,” said Gupta in his acceptance speech. “I feel grateful and humbled. I dedicate this award to all my editors who work day and night. It is tough to edit a newspaper with TV media at the back and in front of us. I also thank my dad who gave me charge 15 years ago.”

Kubra Sait, the host for the evening credited Gupta with helping Dainik Jagran evolve into an innovative and widely read newspaper that has remained true to the Indian spirit.

In other awards, Bollywood star Varun Dhawan was chosen as the Brand Endorser of the Year. “It is a good thing that I wore a suit,” he joked after his name was announced.

“They say film stars make more money from endorsements than from their films. This is not true for me. I drove here in a Mahindra XUV 100, have used Ponds face wash to clean up and I will pack my award in a Skybag. I will try my best to make India proud.”

Rajat Sharma won the TV Anchor of the Year award. “It is a big day for me today,” said Sharma. “I thank the prestigious jury for this award. It was 23 years ago on this very day that the first episode of ‘Aap ki Adalaat’ was telecast. What I am today is because of the good answers the people who came on my show gave, rather than because I asked good questions. This award will be a guiding light for me. I will try to live up to it.”

The highlight of the event was a capella group Raga Trippin’ who performed a mashup of ‘Saare Jahan Se Acha’ and ‘Vande Mataram’. The group of six, Alan De Souza, Gary Misquitta, Gwen Dias, Keshia Braganza, Suzanne D’Mello and Thomson Andrews had also performed at the 2015 Indian Premier League (IPL) opening ceremony.

Other winners at the event included Raj Nayak of Colors who won Media Person of the Year, Kumar Mangalam Birla who won the CEO of the year award among others. Bharat Patel from Procter and Gamble was inducted in the IAA Hall of Fame for building the Vicks brand in India and making it a household name.
