A seven-year-old girl was allegedly crushed to death by a speeding BEST bus near Navrang cinema in suburban Andheri on Wednesday, police said.

The furious mob that assembled at the site after the accident, pelted stones, damaged the public transport and thrashed the bus driver, police said, adding that the bus driver, who sustained injuries, was rushed to Cooper hospital.

The 257-route BEST bus was heading towards Andheri railway station when the accident took place, BEST spokesperson said.

"The deceased girl, identified as Nagma Ramzan Ali Shaikh, was crossing the road when the speeding bus lost control and rammed into her, injuring her seriously. The girl came under the rear wheels of the bus and was rushed to Cooper hospital," Assistant Police Commissioner Dilip Suryavanshi said.

"Seeing the injured girl, the pedestrians and other passers-by thrashed bus driver Ramadhar Kanojiya. The incident led to stone pelting and the bus was damaged by the mob," Suryavanshi said.

"The police swung into action and brought the situation under control within a few minutes of the incident," he added.

The Kanojiya was booked for causing death of a person due to reckless driving, the officer said, adding that he was undergoing treatment in the hospital.
