Sunil Barve – a teacher from Ghatkopar based school who is arrested in the case has been working with the school for around 21 years as a regular teacher in the secondary section. He was involved with the examination work as he was appointed as supervisor. This is not the first time that he has been involved in supervising duty for board examination. A teacher, who was never part of any controversy is suddenly coming under the cloud of police investigation has left everybody shocked.
Principal of the school, told mid-day, "We are all shocked. We would have never thought that this teacher would be involved in anything like this. He has been working with us for so long – around 21 years. He teaches secondary section and is very student-friendly teacher. He has been taking initiatives in several extra-curricular activities in schools encouraging students. Who would have ever thought?"
The school is currently closed due to summer holidays. However, while police investigation continues the school management have also to begin own inquiry on the said matter. "Currently the teacher is under complete mental stress. He has also not been keeping well. When the authorities at school started questioning him after they learnt about his involvement, his health deteriorated and was required to be taken to hospital," said a management official.
The Kashimira police who have been investigating the HSC paper leak case have arrested Sunil Barve (44), who was granted bail after being produced before the court.
Senior Police Inspector of Kashimira Police Station, Anil Kadam, told mid-day, "One teacher Sunil Barve was arrested in this case. Barve who is resident of Sanpada has confessed to the crime. He did this to help brother of his friend (a bar dancer). But the boy, who has also confessed that he received question-paper from him, circulated it further to his friends. Among those a student uploaded the image on social media. However we are yet investigating in the matter." The teacher is booked under Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University, Board and other specified examination Act 1982, (section 7), IPC sections 204,188,34, and under sections 43 (A), 66 (D), 72 (A) of the IT Act, 2000.
"The teacher clicked photo of the question paper while other teachers were busy making bundles of question-papers to be distributed in classrooms. He forwarded the image to a student who was to appear for the same examination. The student is brother of a bar-dancer who the teacher friends with. According to the teacher he did it to help the boy. This might have happened for other papers as well which is why the investigation is on."
Secretary of the Mumbai Division of Maharashtra State Board, Siddheshwar Chandekar, said, "We learnt about the arrest however we yet await complete investigation report from police. But it is anyway established that the photos begin to circulate after 10.20 am on the examination day. This is around that time when question-paper bundles are opened in different examination centres and students are entering examination hall. This explains that it could not have been reached to many students. Hence there comes no question of re-examination. Also it is not possible to conduct re-exam considering the vast nature of state board examination."
