The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked railways to upgrade its system so as to prevent crime against women in local trains and on platforms and consider forming an expert committee to study advanced technologies globally.

"The CCTVs on platforms and other places are of outdated technology. It does not help prevent crime. You (railways) should upgrade to better technology. Consider forming an expert technical committee which would study technological advancements across the world and give suggestions," a division bench of justices N H Patil and S B Shukre said.

The court was hearing a bunch of petitions highlighting the issue of crime against women and the state government's 'failure' to prevent and curb such incidents.

The High Court observed that in a populous city like Mumbai, where there is shortage of manpower, use of technology has to be high. The state government today informed the court that it was considering the suggestion given by HC on the last hearing with regard to amendment in the Bombay Shops and Establishments Act by which a shopkeeper's licence can be cancelled, if a hidden or spy camera is seized from the shop's trial room.

The court has directed all authorities to file affidavits in three weeks.
