Mumbai will resonate to the tune of Marathi music tonight, as several bands will take the stage to belt out popular Marathi numbers.

The reason: after believing the celebrations for Marathi Diwas, which falls on February 27, drew a pale comparison to the revelry of the Uttar Pradesh Diwas celebrated in January, Yuva Sena, the youth wing of the Shiv Sena, has decided to organise a battle of the bands called Awaaz Konacha on the eve of Marathi Diwas at Nare Park, Parel.

Bands including Avykta from Pune, Ameya and Mad Star from Thane, Marathi Rockers and the ARD Band from the city will perform at the event, which will be judged by the likes of Abhijit Pohankar, Abhijit Sawant, Anu Malik, Gayatri Ganjawala and Taufiq Qureshi.

Commenting on the event, Aaditya Thackeray, president of Yuva Sena, said, "Awaaz Konacha is a unique concept of having bands compete against each other. Bands from all over the state will compete. This is only the beginning and the participants in the competition will increase with each passing year."

When asked what made him think of this concept, he said that initially Marathi Diwas was celebrated simply by putting up banners.

But, he believed that it was necessary to instill some life into Marathi Diwas, which spurred him to organise a battle of the bands. He also added that from next year auditions would be carried out within the districts and the best would later perform on Marathi Diwas.

The organisers are expecting a crowd of nearly 5,000 to attend the event and in addition to a local police security cover, private security guards have been deployed.

"We are expecting a crowd of youngsters and college students. We want to avoid any untoward incident, and hence have hired private security guards," said Purvesh Sarnaik, one of the organisers.

Sarnaik explained how the entire process would be carried out and said that there would be three rounds where bands will first only perform an instrumental piece, followed by a performance of a Marathi song and then an original composition. The band that wins two of the three rounds would win.
