6 Khar flats near police station burgled

Six flats, just a minute away from Nirmal Nagar police station in Khar (E), were burgled in the early hours of Sunday. The cops were unaware of the break-ins until residents found their doors wide open in the morning. The incident took place in building number 9.u00a0

Wiped clean: Building no 9 where the break-ins took place

The six flats belonged to Smita Mhatre (flat 302), Ashok Padwal (292), Manmohan Chonkar (310), Ashok Padwal (311), R D’silva (315), and Jagdish Chauhan (320). Most of the flats were unoccupied when the theft took place, with residents either out of town or having moved places. Cops said this is the second incident of housebreaking in the building. The earlier theft was in May in flats 301 and 303.

The police said that the burglars walked away with electronic appliances like television sets, laptops and other electronic items.

Chonkar, owner of flat 310, said, “I moved out of the building and currently reside at Vile Parle. However, I had my laptop and a few things inside the house that have gone missing.”

No night patrolling
The incident has raised serious concerns over the functioning of the Nirmal Nagar police station, since the number of housebreakings registered with it have been on a steady rise. “There is no night patrolling in the area. We have complained to the police on several occasions but they turn a deaf ear to us,” said a resident from the area.

A resident of the building, Nitin Jadhav, said, “The burglars must have entered after 1 am. They seemed to have been thorough with their homework. The incident occurred after 1 am and before 6 am. When we stepped out for a morning walk, we saw the locks of the doors broken and informed all the residents immediately and called the cops.”

A police officer from Nirmal Nagar police station said, “The earlier theft is yet unsolved and the burglaries this time look like the handiwork of the same gang. Some of the residents are still to return from their hometowns, so we are yet to ascertain the items that have been stolen. Televisions and a laptop from two flats have been reported stolen.

DCP Namdev Chavan (Zone VIII) said, “On the basis of primary information, we have registered housebreaking cases against the unknown accused. The investigations are in process.” u00a0
