The Malabar Hill Police in Mumbai has launched a search operation to nab a man who allegedly killed his wife and later fled the crime scene, the police said on Sunday.

An official said that the police have arrested the mother-in-law of the deceased for allegedly destructing the evidence in matter.

According to the police, the incident took place on May 4 at around 10.30 pm near Shimla House in Walkeshwar and the deceased was identified as Archana Vardham (36).

Shalaka Patil, the sister of the victim said, “My brother Akshay Nalawade who stays at a distance from Archana Vardham’s residence informed that her husband Ajay had stabbed her and then fled from the scene. He informed the police and registered an FIR against Ajay and his mother. We demand that the police should take strict action against Ajay and his mother for the crime.”

According to Patil, Archana and Ajay had been married for over 15 years and they frequently fought as Ajay had a drinking case.

She alleged that he was drunk when he stabbed my sister on May 4. The two had 2 kids, Shalaka Patil said while talking to mid-day.

According to police, an FIR was registered in the matter and the cops arrested the mother-in-law in the matter for destruction of evidence.

“We arrested Asha alias Saraswati Vardham, 62, she and her son allegedly changed the victims clothes as they were covered with blood stains and then also mopped the floor after committing the crime,” said an officer on condition of anonymity.

“Ajay is still missing and we have formed several teams to apprehend him,” the officer added.

According to the police, Archana worked as a house help in the nearby area and Ajay worked at a construction site.

Ajay and his mother Saraswati Vardham have been booked under section 302 (murder), 201 (destruction of evidence) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC, the police said.
