The family of a 27-year-old autistic woman, Ayushi Majethia, who went missing from Chembur on March 25, has alleged that the police delayed registering a First Information Report (FIR) by 17 days. They say the delay by Chembur police as well as the lack of sensitivity by GRP personnel has cost them dearly, as the Valiv police had recovered an unidentified body of a woman on March 27 in Vasai East and disposed it after post mortem. Her brother identified it from pictures.

Nishant Majethia, Ayushi’s brother, said, “I had told the officer that my sister is an autistic woman and needs special care. They ignored my request for an FIR, as they were confused over invoking the relevant section of IPC. I kept insisting they register a kidnapping case as her IQ level was equivalent to a child’s.”
“I wrote a letter to the commissioner of police and met Joint Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil who directed Chembur police to register an FIR under section 363 (kidnapping) of IPC. Had the Chembur police registered the FIR on time and promptly started the investigation, my sister could have been rescued,” recalled Majethia.

The Majethia family was told by Chembur police on May 3 that Ayushi was no more. According to Chembur police, “An unidentified body was recovered in Vasai East and an ADR was registered at Valiv police station. The description of the body matched with Ayushi.” He said he doesn’t understand how she reached Vasai.
PSI Sandeep Divate of Valiv police station, told mid-day they recovered the body on March 27 and the post mortem report revealed she died of dehydration and pneumonia. “Since all mortuaries at hospitals were full due to COVID deaths, we had to dispose of the body on March 28,” said Divate. The nail clippings, etc. have been sent for forensic tests.
Senior Inspector of Chembur police station Shalini Sharma said, “We checked all the police stations in Mumbai and started checking police stations in Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar police commissionerate.
Our plan was to check upto Gujarat, but we got to know about the recovery of a female body in Vasai East.” Justifying the delay in filing the FIR, Sharma said, “The family had produced her mental health certificate from 2015. When we did not get any breakthrough after thorough investigation of 15 days, we registered a kidnapping case.”
