The Mumbai Police's Crime Branch team on Wednesday arrested Shahid Shaikh from Gujarat's Surat in connection with a 2016 murder in Govandi. Police officials said that Shahid is accused of killing a Govandi resident in August 2016.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Shivaji Nagar police had arrested three persons - Rizwan Shaikh (21), Najmum alias Rani Ansari (22), and Nagma Ansari (42) in connection with the murder.

In July 2019, Rizwan was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, while the other two were acquitted for lack of evidence. However, at the time, Shahid left Mumbai soon after the incident and started living in Surat by changing his identity, a police officer.

After assistant inspector Valmik Kore got a tip-off about Shahid, a team went to Surat and brought the accused to Mumbai. During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. Later, he was handed over to Shivaji Nagar police for further legal process, police inspector Nandkumar Gopale of unit 9 said.

According to police, Shahid was notorious in Indira Nagar area of Govandi. He allegedly used to illegally supply electricity to around 400 slums in his area, an officer said. The deceased, Bakar Ali Ansari, also lived in the same area.

The alleged incident took place when Shahid damaged the roof of Bakar's shanty while providing an electric connection to a resident in the area. Bakar had a heated argument, during which Rizwan stabbed Bakar twice with a chopper, while Shahid hit the victim with a brick.

Although Bakar was rushed to a nearby hospital, he was declared dead on arrival, assistant inspector Kore said. A case was registered with Shivaji Nagar police under charges of murder and common intention against the four accused.
