Thane: A youth was arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl living in his neighbourhood in a slum area of the city, police said today.

The 21-year-old accused, identified as Nanhe alias Ketan Kadam, who has past criminal record, called the girl in his chawl situated on Ambedkar road of Khopat area here on the pretext of giving her money to buy snacks, Naupada police station senior inspector S S Pagare said. He then locked his chawl from inside and raped the girl, Pagare said quoting a complaint filed by the victim's mother.
As per the complaint, the accused allegedly raped the girl on July 13 and 15 and threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the offence to anyone, the police official said. The scared girl kept mum after the incident, but after mustering courage she informed her family members yesterday following which her mother filed a complaint with police. Kadam was arrested last night and charged under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and also sections 3 and 4 of the POCSO Act, 2012, police said, adding that further investigation in the case was on.
