2008 Malegaon blast: Victims appeal for maximum punishment for accused

The victims of the 2008 Malegaon blast have called for the maximum punishment for all the seven accused in the case, stating that their conviction would "send a strong message to the nation that there is no place for violence and terrorism in our society." The plea was made by the victims in their written arguments submitted before special National Investigation Agency (NIA) Judge AK Lahoti, who is presiding over the case, news agency PTI reported. Among the accused are former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from Bhopal, Pragya Thakur, and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit. The prosecution has established a clear connection among the accused, demonstrating their collective aim to execute the bomb blast and carry out terrorist acts, the written statement filed on behalf of the victims stated. "It has been proven beyond reasonable doubt that the present accused and those absconding are the sole culprits responsible for this heinous act, which resulted in the deaths of six individuals and serious injuries to 101 others. Therefore, on behalf of the victims, we humbly request that the maximum punishment be imposed on those facing trial," the plea by the 2008 Malegaon blast stated. The prosecution cited a total of 495 witnesses in its charge sheet, of whom 323 have been examined. Of these, 37 turned hostile, while 39 were dropped during the trial, and 21 passed away, the victims' plea noted.  "It is a well-known fact that the accused are high-profile and influential individuals. Witnesses may have faced immense pressure, and it is likely that some were threatened or coerced not to testify against the accused in court. The potential for witness tampering cannot be completely dismissed," the statement by the 2008 Malegaon blast victims said. "Only civilian witnesses turned hostile; none of the police or independent witnesses did so, and they fully supported the prosecution's case. While some discrepancies regarding dates, times, and names have emerged over time, these are minor and can be reconciled when considering the evidence as a whole. The accused should not benefit from these discrepancies," it continued. Malegaon blast left six people dead, more than 100 injured According to PTI, the written arguments also commended the investigating officer from the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) for effectively gathering information under challenging circumstances and completing procedural work within the designated timeframe.  However, the victims noted that changes in government led to variations in the approach of prosecuting agencies, yet they maintained their faith in the judiciary and firmly believed that this is a clear case warranting conviction. "By convicting the accused, the court may send a strong message to the nation that there is no place for violence and terrorism in our society," the written argument emphasised. The victims expressed that they "faced humiliation in their quest for justice, but the courts have upheld their rights throughout the process."  On September 29, 2008, an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle detonated near a mosque in Malegaon, a town in north Maharashtra about 200 km from Mumbai, resulting in six fatalities and over 100 injuries.  In addition to Pragya Thakur and Lt Col Purohit, the other accused facing trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Indian Penal Code (IPC) include Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retired), Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sameer Kulkarni, stated PTI.  On October 30, 2018, the special court framed charges against the seven accused under sections 16 (committing a terrorist act) and 18 (conspiring to commit a terrorist act) of UAPA, as well as sections 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 153(a) (promoting enmity between different religious groups) of IPC. The case was initially investigated by the Maharashtra ATS before being handed over to the National Investigation Agency in 2011. (With PTI inputs)

Salman firing case: Mumbai court says Lawrence Bishnoi's kin involved

The shooters apprehended for firing outside actor Salman Khan's residence did so with the "intention or knowledge" to kill him, acting on the instigation of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's brother, Anmol, a Mumbai court stated while denying bail to one of the accused in the case.  BD Shelke, the special judge for cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), denied bail to shooter Vicky Gupta on October 18. The detailed order was, however, released on Monday, October 21. Gupta and his associate, Sagar Pal, fired near Salman Khan's Galaxy Apartments residence in Bandra West on the morning of April 14, reported news agency PTI. In the order, Judge Shelke noted that the first information report (FIR) clearly indicates that two individuals arrived on a motorcycle, with the pillion rider firing shots at the first floor of Salman Khan's home. "The statement of the victim [Khan] reveals that, as a celebrity, he has many fans and often greets them from the gallery on the first floor of his house, even in the early morning," the court stated. The bench further remarked that Salman Khan's statement and the FIR's details suggest "the shots were fired in the direction of where he spends time in his house."  The order also mentioned that a call recording transcript between Gupta and Anmol has been submitted by the prosecution. "This demonstrates that, on Anmol Bishnoi's instigation and directions, accused number 1 (Gupta) and accused number 2 (Pal) committed these acts," the court noted. Bishnoi is named as a wanted accused in the charge sheet filed by the police, PTI reported. The judge emphasised that the confessional statement of the accused is crucial prima facie evidence in the bail decision. According to PTI, the court highlighted Gupta's admission of having come into contact with Pal and subsequently joining the gang of the wanted accused. Gupta detailed how he joined the gang and outlined the reconnaissance and planning that preceded the shooting. The court observed that the confessional statement and supporting evidence clearly indicate that Gupta and Pal, along with other wanted individuals, conspired to kill Khan with the knowledge of their criminal intentions.  Regarding the invocation of MCOCA against Gupta, the court stated that the accused cannot evade charges punishable under the Act merely because they lack prior criminal records. The chargesheets against Lawrence and Anmol Bishnoi, both wanted in this case, can be considered for applying MCOCA against Gupta, the court concluded. The evidence presented, including the confessional statement, suggests Gupta's complicity in the crime. Considering the nature of the offence, the court deemed the possibility of similar crimes being repeated by a gang member as significant. Judge Shelke ruled that the accused is not entitled to bail. Gupta, Pal, Sonukumar Bishnoi, Mohd Rafiq Choudhary, and Harpal Singh are currently in judicial custody for the firing incident. Another accused, Anujkumar Thapan, has reportedly committed suicide while in police custody. (With PTI inputs)

Man who threatened actor Salman Khan says message was sent by 'mistake'

While investigating the recent threats made to superstar Salman Khan through a message sent on the traffic police’s WhatsApp number, the Mumbai Police received another message from the same sender, apologising for the incident. Police sources revealed that the individual claimed that the threat message was sent by mistake and expressed regret for the incident. The police traced the sender’s location to Jharkhand, and a team has been dispatched to apprehend him.  Sources also stated that the individual initially identified himself as a close associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and claimed he could mediate a truce between Khan and the gangster. An officer disclosed that in the threat message sent to the Mumbai Traffic Police’s WhatsApp number, the sender had demanded Rs 5 crore to settle the long-standing feud between Khan and Bishnoi. The sender asserted that he could broker peace between the two and demanded money for his efforts, warning that if the amount was not paid, Khan’s fate would be worse than that of former Maharashtra Minister Baba Siddique, who was shot dead on October 12, purportedly by Bishnoi's gang members. The message sent to the traffic police warned, “Don’t take this lightly. If Salman Khan wants to stay alive and end his enmity with Lawrence Bishnoi, he must pay Rs 5 crore. If the money isn’t paid, Salman’s fate will be worse than Baba Siddique’s.” Mumbai Police have taken the threat seriously and launched a thorough investigation to establish the identity of the WhatsApp user. The security of the actor was also upgraded, police sources said. Last week, the Panvel City Police had arrested a sixth accused in connection with the assassination plot against Bollywood actor Salman Khan. The accused, identified as Sukhbinder alias Sukha, was arrested from Panipat, Haryana. In June, the Panvel City Police had filed a charge sheet against five other accused in the case. According to the charge sheet, the gang had closely monitored Khan’s movements, from his Bandra residence to his Panvel farmhouse and the Film City in Mumbai, planning to kill him in a manner similar to the assassination of singer Sidhu Moose Wala. They intended to use weapons such as AK-47, M16, and AK-92, which were supposed to be supplied from Pakistan by a member of the Bishnoi gang. Salman Khan assassination plot: Man nabbed from Haryana last week  According to sources, the Panvel City Police have named at least 18 accused in the case and have arrested six so far. Officers stated that Sukha is a known member of the Bishnoi gang and had been on the Navi Mumbai Police’s radar.  According to the Navi Mumbai Police, the shooters were offered a contract of Rs 25 lakh to kill Salman Khan. The planning took place between August 2023 and April 2024 before the Panvel City Police made the first arrest in the case, led by Inspector Anjum Bagwan. The Panvel City Police filed charge sheets against five accused: Gaurav Bhatia alias Nahayi alias Sandeep Bishnoi, Vaspi Mehmood Khan alias Waseem Chikna, Dhananjay Singh alias Ajay Kashyap, Zishaan Zakrul Hasan alias Javed Khan, and Deepak Hawa Singh Gogaliya alias John Walmiki. The police have named 18 accused in the first information report (FIR), including Bishnoi and Goldy Brar. As per the charge sheet, the plan was orchestrated by Bishnoi, his brother Anmol, Brar, and a Pakistani individual, identified as Dogar. The accused formed a WhatsApp group to coordinate the attack, with Dogar providing weapons from Pakistan. Around 60–70 people were involved in the conspiracy, conducting surveillance on Salman Khan's locations, including his home and film sets. The information was received by investigating officer PI Nitin Thackeray on November 26, 2023. The officials acted on this information and made the first arrest, of Kashyap, on April 28 this year. The charge sheet further revealed that during the investigation, officials discovered a WhatsApp video where the accused, Kashyap, was on a call with a wanted individual named Dogar in Pakistan. In the video, Dogar was displaying high-tech weapons intended to be transported to India to kill Salman Khan. “Dogar said that we could purchase these high-tech weapons, but the amount needed to be transferred to our boss Goldy Brar's account in Canada. Once this was done, the weapons could be transported from Pakistan,” the police noted in the charge sheet. The charge sheet also states that once the weapons were transported to India, various shooters were stationed in Pune, Raigad, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Gujarat on the orders of Goldy Brar. “The shooters awaited orders from Brar and Anmol Bishnoi to kill Salman Khan. For the shootings, they assigned people who were below 18 years of age. Additionally, the members assigned one person, named John, to provide a vehicle for the shooters to carry out the assassination,” the charge sheet read.

Ankur Meena (black shirt), the alleged mastermind behind the dating app scam, in the custody of the authorities

Dating app scam: Kingpin tells Mumbai Police, ‘Made Rs 20 Lakh/day for clubs’

Ankur Meena, alias Happy, also known as “Meena Defaulter,” the alleged mastermind behind a massive dating app scam in India, has revealed shocking details during police interrogation. Meena claimed that he would generate up to Rs 20 lakh in business for clubs in a single day. Recently arrested by Bangur Nagar police, Meena confessed that club members were fully aware of the fraudulent activities, motivated by the desire to increase their profits. According to Meena, he personally trained the girls working for the dating app. Every 10 to 15 days, a new group of girls, many of whom had previously worked in Delhi and other states, would arrive in Mumbai to familiarise themselves with the job. Meena claimed that club members were fully aware of the fraudulent activities Meena would then instruct them on how to interact with customers, focusing on behaviours that would please clients and encourage large spending. While new recruits followed Meena’s guidance closely, more experienced girls often disregarded it and worked independently to maximise their commissions by engaging with more customers. Meena also played a key role in identifying clubs, negotiating with their owners, and devising business strategies, while the day-to-day operations were handled by his team members. However, Meena claimed that some members of his team, driven by greed, engaged in scams on their own, creating fake bills to inflate commissions. He denied knowledge of these fraudulent activities, asserting that he paid everyone in his team equally. Despite this, some boys and girls continued scamming customers by colluding with club owners.  Ankur Meena, the alleged mastermind behind the dating app scam Following the expose of the dating app racket in Mumbai, Meena shut down the operations and instructed his team members to leave the city. While most complied, a few stayed behind and continued scamming by partnering with various clubs. Six of these individuals were recently arrested by Bangur Nagar police, according to an officer involved in the investigation. Meena, who was in police custody until October 16, was remanded in judicial custody. Amboli police have now taken him into custody for his involvement in a case related to the Godfather Club. Meena was produced before the Bandra holiday court and remanded in three days of police custody, an officer from Amboli police station confirmed.
