Tired of waiting in a queue at your nearest coffee shop, as you watch your coffee being brewed? Now, spend that time productively by learning how to whip up your own brew.

All this week, Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters, the SoBo coffee shop known for their freshly roasted Arabica coffee, are giving customers the chance to be their own baristas. “We regularly conduct brewing workshops, which does well. This is for people who don’t own fancy coffee machines at home but are still keen to learn how to get a good cup out of them,” shares Mesha Bhansali, community manager at the coffee shop.

“We will give you everything you need to brew your own cup. There will also be trained baristas at hand to guide you through the entire process.”

You can learn to make coffee using four methods -- French Press, Siphon, Pour Over and Aeropress; each will have a different table set up especially for it. “These are all manual brewing methods, chosen because they are easily accessible and not too expensive. It’s a good way to get started with your coffee journey,” she suggests. In the future, she adds, depending on the feedback, they may include more coffee-making methods.

Blue Tokai regularly hosts brewing and coffee workshops; last week they taught customers to make espresso. “We have advanced customers; they approach us with a variety of questions each time they drop by for coffee. This lets them experience the entire brewing process,” says Bhansali.

The best part: You pay only for the cost of the drink; the guidance comes free.

Trained baristas will be at each brewing station

Pour Over

It involves pouring water over the coffee grounds, using a filter and filter paper, to extract the coffee into the cup.

French Press

It involves letting hot water steep over coarsely ground coffee for a few minutes before pressing down the filter and serving it.

Aeropress

Similar to a French Press, in this, the water is pushed through a filter instead of staying in the container with the grounds.

Siphon

In this, a coffee maker has two chambers. The bottom one is heated, forcing the water to rise into the upper one, where it is mixed with coffee grounds. This then passes through a filter and down into the lower chamber.
