In the business since January 2016, ShopHop launched a new subscription box called Taste Case this week. The box allows you to discover new brands, products by home chefs and enjoy the experience of a farmers’ market at home every month. You can pick from a variety of ethnic foods, preserves, jams, chutneys, dips, sauces, snacks, desserts, exotic vegetables, gourmet teas and coffees. Who doesn’t like surprises? When the neatly packed box arrived at our office, we were curious about the goodies inside.

We received the contents of the May box, which included Flax Seed Cookies by Flat Tummies. They weren’t too sweet, felt healthy but were a bit bland. There were two Gardner Street green tea packs in the flavours of rose and hibiscus, both of which were mild, fragrant and flavourful. Also, in the box were dips from Saucery, including a cranberry and walnut one that was creamy and crunchy and a mildly spicy schezwan sauce.

Our favourites, however, were the sauces from The Big Bong Kitchen featuring a Dhoneypatar Anchar (coriander leaf pickle) and an Amshotto Khejurer Chutney (dried mango and date sauce). Both left us wanting more. While we tried the Dhoneypatar Anchar for the first time, the latter is a staple at Bengali wedding feasts and made a rather simple dinner, delicious.

Another highlight was a mix of traditional and contemporary recipes we found in the box. Each box costs Rs 750. You can also choose between a three-month subscription (Rs 2,000) and a six-month subscription (Rs 3,500). Many of the products in the subscription box are not exclusive and are individually available on various other portals too. However, on a day that’s not going your way, a box of surprises like this one is the best way to bring on the cheer and perk you up instantly.
