Mrs G & Son, a Peddar Road-based brand run by a mother-son duo, feature dips and sandwich spreads that are perfect for a summery, healthy indulgence
The Jalapeno and Cheese dip was the overwhelming favourite in the newsroom
On a summer afternoon, nothing soothes us more than curling up on the bed with a Kindle and a bowl of thick, creamy dip with breadsticks by the side. To their credit, Mrs G & Son, a Peddar Road-based brand run by a mother-son duo, 56-year-old Nita and 33-year-old Darshan Gokani, managed to transport us to the cosy setting even on a manic workday. Delivering across Mumbai (they deliver only bulk orders to the suburbs), their offerings feature dips and sandwich spreads such as Dill and Lime, Triple Chilli Cheese, Pineapple Chilli, Lemon Pepper and Peri Peri Magic. Freshly prepared every day, the dips claim to be preservative, artificial colours, mayo and cream free too.

The Jalapeno and Cheese dip was the overwhelming favourite in the newsroom
We sampled four varieties — Jalapeno and Cheese (Rs 200 each for 250 gm), Bloody Mary, Really, Insatiable Italian and Wasabi & Mom’s Secret Ingredient. Neatly packaged and chilled, the dips arrived in airtight plastic containers with the instruction to keep them refrigerated. We also liked the fact that each container included a break-up of fats, proteins, carbs, energy and the ingredients too.

Taste test
We began with Insati-able Italian. Layered with oregano and paprika, the tomato-based hung curd dip had bags of spicy-sweet flavours, which went well with the accompanied lavash. Next we dipped a bread stick in Bloody Mary, Really. With red chilli powder generously sprinkled on the top, the dip tasted similar to the Tabasco-spiced concoction. However, this one was on the tangier side, thanks to the hung curd. So, we tried to intersperse the offering with Wasabi & Mom’s Secret Ingredient. Pecked with black sesame, the pale green-hued dip was an eye-pleaser. Fearing the pungent Japanese condiment, we gently coated our lavash and tried a bite. But we didn’t feel the ubiquitous hit, even when we tried a dollop. It was average and we’re still trying to figure what that secret ingredient is.

Our pick of the lot was Jalapeno And Cheese. Packing a punch with generous amounts of both the ingredients, the thick and spicy-sour dip was heavenly. It not only went well with the lavash but also mixed herb sticks and mini toasted breads. We also loved the fact that all the dips stayed thick in consistency (unlike the variety where water begins to ooze out after a while) through the day, even without the refrigeration. We’re fans, Mrs G & Son.
