"I have wanted to dabble in theatre for a long time and this story was good and valid for exploration," confesses Das, who plays the role of Gayathri in the play.
Written and directed by Sachin Gupta, the play begins on a normal day at Gandhi Bazaar with shopkeepers busy attending customers and people walking on the streets. Suddenly a series of bomb blasts strikes and the course of the play changes. Gupta confesses that the play has been inspired by major blasts and accidents that Indian metropolitans have witnessed over the last two decades. Wakeup Call, according to Gupta is the story of how when a catastrophe-like blast occurs we are only concerned with how our near and dear ones are but ignore the rest.
"The play shows how we do not care beyond a point. It is high time that we get out of this comfort zone and do something to bring a change," explains Gupta. He adds that the play deals with a somber issue but has some lighter moments to give the audience a breather.
Wakeup Call depicts how the reactions of victims and their dear ones vary from the onlookers. Gupta also brings out the insensitive portrayal of the media during a blast and shows how in its earnestness to capture news, the reporters throw tactless and unfeeling questions like 'How does it feel that you have lost your child in the blast?'u00a0 Wakeup Call, according to Gupta explores different mindsets of people. After the blast, Ruhi, a young woman turns pessimistic and is hopeless about the system while a mother, who has lost her daughter, wants to commit suicide. On the other hand, Sridhar is too involved in his own life and career to bother about anything else while Gayathri, a young professional played by Das is a positive woman wanting to bring a change in how people think and act. Gupta describes all the characters as intense and says that each of them represent the diverse thoughts of contemporary society.
Explaining why the character Gayathri appeals to her, Das says, "She is a lot like people I have met in my life. She is practical and sees through the mirages that life offers."
Gupta clarifies that Wakeup Call does not come with a distinct message but aims to make you think as you watch. "I hope the play appeals to everyone's subconscious and makes them want to contribute in their own small way to bring a change," says Gupta.
