Laya Project won the Founder's Choice Award for Best Documentary at the New York International Independent Film Festival 2007 in NY and LA, Best Film Award at the Byron Bay Film Festival 2008 in Australia, Audience Award at Imaginaria Film Festival 2008 in Italy and the Special Juror's Choice Award at the Zanzibar International Film Festival 2008 in Tanzania.
It is a documentary about the lives and music culture of coastal and surrounding communities in the 2004 tsunami-affected regions of Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar and India. Laya Project is a visual journey documenting folk music recorded and filmed on location. Some of these performances are rare, and documented for the first time. The musicians are primarily from coastal communities affected by the tsunami of December 26, 2004.
