Book lovers, rejoice! A new crowd-sourced books library in town will deliver books to your doorstep and throw in cool discounts for jobless folks, as well.
While Mumbai might have its bookshops and booksellers, there are a measly number of libraries to choose from. However, with crowdfunding and crowdsourcing being buzzwords these days, the approach is being applied to an online library as well. Started by a copywriter and a digital social media content developer, Pushpendra Pandya, the Crowd Sourced Book Library (working title) aims to save the communal book reading experience in resistance to online reading platforms.

Pandya claims that this is India’s first such initiative; he plans to take it to Pune, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Delhi and other cities, eventually. Pandya started the library noticing that books are expensive. Plus, he was denied a job of a librarian, as he was under qualified. “I embraced rejection and here we are, running the show, with the people,” the 31-year-old says.
Membership starts fromu00a0R 250 for a month and goes up to R1,900 for 12 months (no deposits). Members are entitled to up to 52 books yearly and book extensions can be extended by request. Most books will be delivered on weekends. Plus, they plan to offer discounts and complimentary books to broke and unemployed readers based on referrals.
Interestingly the library is still nameless. “But there are many suggestions pouring in. Yet, being unable to shortlist anything crisp, it’s nameless for now,” he admits. There are 1,000-plus books on the roster and in a few weeks, it’s expected to cross 2,000. Books can be ordered via text, call, Facebook and tweets.
