Head to the museum for a workshop on eco-friendly craft and gardening techniques, and do your bit to save the planet on the occasion of World Environment Day

Global warming and climate change begins with us. That's the message of World Environment Day (WED), an event that was instituted in 1972 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The annual event helps people understand how they can be agents of change, be it through a neighborhood clean-up initiative, planting a tree, restricting use of plastic bags, walking to work or starting a recycling drive. This year, India is the global host for the WED celebrations and the theme is Forests -- Nature at your service. To celebrate the occasion, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya will be hosting eco-friendly workshops and activities from June 3 to 5.

"We are on a mission to preserve the natural heritage of our country and this occasion is perfect to highlight the dangers of shrinking forests," says Bilwa Kulkarni, Business Development Executive, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. The event line-up will include free sessions of organic gardening, Warli painting and paper recycling as well as paid papier mache and Magic from Castaway sessions.

The papier mache and paper recycling workshop will teach people to recycle paper and create utility items from waste. These include designing attractive glove puppets using paper bags and old greeting cards. The Magic from Castaway workshop will show you how to craft vases, pen stands and other decorative items from used plastic bottles and broken teacups. If you have a green thumb, attend their organic gardening sessions where you can learn techniques from seasoned gardeners on vermi composting and how to maintain an organic home garden with natural resources. Participants will be given a medicinal sapling at the end of the session. Warli tribal art has also been added to the line-up, given its focus on nature-based motifs and use of natural colours.

"The workshops are open to everyone, irrespective of age. We prefer mixed group sessions as it leads to an enriched experience. While adults have more practical knowledge, children have a lot of untapped creativity," adds Kulkarni. This event marks the first time that the Museum will celebrate World Environment Day.
The maximum seats for every workshop is 25.

At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, MG Road, Fort. Call 22844484 Email csmvsmumbai@gmail.comu00a0Cost Rs 50 for the papier mache workshop, Rs 100 for the Magic from Castaways workshop. The remaining workshops are free of cost; prior registration is a must.

Wed 2011 theme Nature at Your Service
This year's theme celebrates forests which cover one third of the earth's land mass. Around 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihood and they play a key role in the battle against climate change by releasing oxygen into the atmosphere while storing carbon dioxide.
