'He thinks of me only as a friend...'

Dear Diana

Dear Diana,
I am in love with a guy who likes me as a friend and nothing more. I have known him for over a year. I met him through common friends at a party. He is aware of my feelings for him as I had dropped enough hints and even told him about it. He recently made it clear that I meant nothing to him — I was just his buddy like the rest of his pals. After this, he started avoiding me. But I did not give up. I spoke to him again and at the end he finally said to give him time. He could perhaps change his mind and think of me as someone special. It has been a month since and I have tried everything to make him change his opinion about me. But no matter what I do, he does not show any signs of loving me. I miss his company and I feel we make a great pair. Sometimes I feel he is playing hard to get. Or am I making a fool of myself? How do I make this guy mine?

Dear Sharbani,
It is clear that he does not like you, but you are hellbent on being his girl. Due to your never-give-up attitude you are assuming that he will start liking you. This is far from true. I don't think this guy thinks of you the way you want him to. You can be his friend, but you want more. He does not want to hurt you so he is telling you to give him time. The fact that he is yet undecided is a sign that he wants you to back off. He is playing the waiting game. You are being patient and holding on to something that will never be yours. Get the hint, face the reality and move on. The longer you drag this out, the longer you are holding yourself back from meeting someone who may care for you and want to be with you.
