Alan Walker: Indian fans know their music well and are always open to a good set

Norwegian DJ Alan Walker visited India this September for a nine-city tour that concluded in Mumbai on October 19. Call it the perfect end because fans were in for a treat that not only involved Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan coming on stage but also fans getting the opportunity to listen to Walker’s mix of the ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ title track. The DJ and music producer also played a version of the viral Marathi song ‘Taambdi Chaamdi’, that made fans in the city dance their hearts out. With such hyperlocal mixes, it is evident that Walker knows his Indian fans well. Interestingly, the DJ who is known for hits such as ‘Faded’ and ‘Alone’, has been coming to India for close to a decade to perform for Sunburn, and the WalkerWorld Tour was one such collaboration. In all this time, Walker has seen quite the evolution in the reception of house music in India, and he has been in the middle of it all with his music concerts.  In an exclusive chat with mid-day.com, the Norwegian DJ spoke about his recent tour, the experience of performing in India, and even tracing the evolution of his music, and recent collaborations with the likes of Pritam. SEE PHOTOS: Amid pouring rain, DJ Alan Walker plays 'Faded', 'Alone' at Mumbai music concertHere are edited excerpts: How has your WalkerWorld Tour in India been? I’m super grateful for how the WalkerWorld India Tour shaped up. I had an amazing time bringing on stage Alia Bhatt in Bengaluru, Guru Randhawa in Pune and Kartik Aaryan in Mumbai. India is just a very culturally diverse and warm country and it’s amazing to see how I get a different audience reaction in every city and with every tour of mine. India just never fails to amaze me.  Since the time that you have been performing in India, how have you seen the Indian audience receive house music? The Indian fans know their music well and are always open to a good set. It has gone from being a niche genre that was once played at small festivals to something that is more mainstream and mainstage.    In the time you have been active as a DJ and a music producer, how have you seen electronic music in the many different genres you dabble, evolve around the world? Electronic music has changed so much. Genres are merging in crazy ways, and it is all about pushing boundaries. No matter where you are, the evolution is constant.  You recently collaborated with the likes of Pritam in India. What has inspired you to explore Indian sounds and music collaborations? Working with Pritam was amazing. We wanted to merge his cultural influences with my electronic style, creating something that felt fresh yet universal. The song reflects themes of hope and resilience, which we both connected with on a personal level. This collaboration gave me a new perspective on blending global sounds, and it’s an experience that left a lasting impact on me. India holds a very special place in my heart, and I enjoy a robust past with the country. I’ve been touring India with Sunburn for almost a decade now.  Lastly, what can fans expect from you soon with music? After India, there’s more touring, dope collaborations and new music. Also Read: AP Dhillon's India tour will feature 360-degree levitation stage to allow fans to enjoy the performance from all sides

Mid-Day Premium Lights, sound, action! Tracing the dynamics of concert culture in India

“I have anticipated this for a long time. Even before the concert was announced, I wrote a message to myself saying ‘Just want to scream Viva la Vida at Coldplay concert’. I guess I manifested it,” shares Dehradun-based engineering student Anushree Verma, who will travel to Mumbai to attend the British band’s concert in January 2025. Coldplay’s music has shaped her and her sister's teenage years. “Their songs were an introduction to a world full of amazing instruments and a sky full of stars. It has always been a dream to watch them perform live because they are the kings of stadium tours. When they came to India earlier, we were too young, but this time, we both didn’t want to miss this opportunity,” she expresses excitedly. Coldplay’s ‘Music of the Spheres’ world tour will reach India in January 2025, and Indian fans couldn’t keep calm as soon as the concert was announced – a fact that was reflected when the tickets were sold out within seconds. The same phenomenon occurred for Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Dil-Luminati’ tour, as many fans were left disappointed when all shows were sold out as soon as the tickets went live. Also Read: Coldplay India 2025: 1.3 crore fans logged in to book tickets on BookMyShow for Mumbai concert at DY Patil Stadium India is witnessing a drastic demand and rise in popularity of music concerts, both for Indian and international artists. Earlier this year, Ed Sheeran’s record-breaking concert in Mumbai saw a footfall of around 50,000 fans according to media reports. Dosanjh and Armaan Malik also joined the artist on stage, creating a special experience for attendees. Festivals like Lollapalooza and Sunburn that offer live music experiences are also a great hit among Indians. Concerts of Indian music legends like Sunidhi Chauhan are attracting huge crowds in the country.  But why do fans choose to attend concerts when they can listen to their favourite music artists through their devices? Urvi Mishra, an avid concert-goer, says, “A concert is an experience to see your favourite artists perform before you. The first concert I ever attended was an AR Rahman gig. Everyone around me was so ecstatic. It’s a different experience vibing on the same wavelength and frequency with so many people at the same time.” According to her, other elements like celebrity guests also add to the charm of music concerts. Harshit Agarwal, a Bangalore-based software engineer, finds the live atmosphere at the venue one of the most appealing things about a music concert. “I can hear the same songs on Spotify also, but at a concert, the speakers, the stage and thousands of people singing the same song make the song more enjoyable. I remember my first concert. Nucleya had come to perform at our college fest. I was already a big fan of Nucleya. It was a surreal experience with all the visuals he plays along with his amazing songs. After that, I have attended several concerts and had a great experience,” he shares. While the concert culture in India has recently come into the limelight, the country’s trust in live music experiences is not new. Manojna Yeluri, an artist rights, entertainment and IPR lawyer and founder of Artistik License, observes, “Live music and concerts have always been a part of the Indian music experience. Whether its club gigs, community performances, house concerts, stadium shows, or music festivals, the idea of experiencing a music performance in person, alongside other fans and community, is not new. Over the years, we've witnessed India playing host to several international acts, while also being the home ground for stellar experiences like the Mahindra Blues Festival, Echoes of Earth and Control Alt Delete just to name a few. The truth is that nothing beats the experience of live music. This has suddenly surged post the pandemic, as artists and audiences alike are craving that IRL (in real life) engagement with each other and their community.” Attending a live concert isn’t just about music. It’s a community experience, an avenue for self-expression and much more. Shruti Shah, a Mumbai-based psychologist and founder of Holistic Mind Therapy, says that the growing popularity of such experiences can also be traced to several psychological factors. She reveals the following factors that may be driving people to be a part of concerts and other social experiences: FOMO (Fear of missing out): Social media amplifies the sense of missing out when others are attending events and sharing their experiences. This can push individuals to attend concerts just to stay in the loop or be part of the trend. Social media validation: People often seek social validation by sharing their concert experiences online, which gives them a sense of belonging. Platforms like Instagram create a highlight-reel culture, encouraging individuals to curate exciting, event-filled lives. Escapism and emotional release: Concerts offer a break from daily life. The energy of live music, the crowd and the shared experience create an immersive environment where people can express their emotions freely, whether it’s joy, excitement or even a sense of nostalgia. Collective experience and community: Attending a concert with friends or like-minded people creates a sense of community. Humans have an innate desire for connection, and concerts can fulfill this need by offering shared, positive experiences that strengthen social bonds. Identity and self-expression: Music often plays a role in identity formation. By attending concerts, individuals can reinforce their personal identity or social image by aligning with specific artists or genres that resonate with their values or personalities. Peer pressure: Concerts, especially big festivals, have become status symbols. There’s a subtle pressure to participate in these events because peers are doing the same, leading to an unconscious urge to follow the crowd. “All these factors make concerts not just about the music, but about the experience and its psychological impact,” remarks Shah.  Perhaps it’s an amalgamation of all these and other socio-economic-cultural factors that are driving Indian fans towards concerts, even if they have to travel to other cities to watch their favourite artist perform live. Surge in travel bookings during concerts Dosanjh’s ‘Dil-Luminati’ tour is set to take place in multiple cities across India, starting with Delhi on October 26. According to data shared by ixigo earlier this month, India is witnessing a surge in travel bookings as fans flock to highly anticipated concerts. Chandigarh, one of the destinations for Dosanjh’s concert, has seen a 300 per cent YoY surge in flight bookings. Other ‘Dil-Luminati’ concert cities like Delhi, Ahmedabad and Indore have recorded an average 100 per cent YoY growth in flight bookings on their respective concert dates. Source: ixigo Similarly, Mumbai, which will host Coldplay’s concert between 18-21 January 2025, has experienced a staggering 350 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase in flight bookings. Source: ixigo Aloke Bajpai, Group CEO, ixigo, shares, “We’ve observed a significant shift in Indian travellers’ preferences, with more people willing to spend on experiences like music concerts and festivals. The passion for live performances is driving fans to travel, and this surge in bookings across flights, trains, and buses shows how music tourism is becoming a major force in the country.” Navigating legal challenges associated with concerts While concert culture has gained immense popularity in the country, recent events like high ticket prices, ticket scalping (unethical re-selling), online frauds, etc., have also highlighted economic and legal challenges. Also Read: Coldplay tickets row: PIL in Bombay HC seeks guidelines against black marketing, ticket scalping Explaining the situation, Yeluri says, “The recent debacle with alleged ticket scalping in the case of Coldplay's show slated for 2025, and upcoming concert shows of Diljit Dosanjh, has brought visibility to the lack of regulation in the space of ticket booking platforms. A recent PIL that's been filed questions the rise of these irregularities and lack of ethical practices. Ultimately, these irregularities and unethical activities seek to exploit the fandom of artists, which is probably what's most heartbreaking.” “With the lack of regulation and accountability, there might always be hurdles that fans might experience when seeking to purchase tickets to their favourite shows. I think it's always helpful to research the authenticity of tickets – ideally, not engaging in practices that only further exploitation and scalping,” she concludes.

The nine-track compilation witnessed Dhillon flexing his artistic versatility to create a masterpiece that transcends geographies and genres, and further demonstrating his commitment to pushing artistic boundaries and embracing diversity in music.

Bigger homes continue to dominate buyers’ demand in India, finds report

Bigger homes continue to dominate demand in India and in the first half this year, at least 51 per cent property preferred 3-BHKs and 39 per cent opted for 2-BHKs, a report showed on Monday. Premium and luxury homes demand surged as 28 per cent respondents now prefer homes priced between Rs 90 lakh–Rs 1.5 crore, compared to 18 per cent in pre-Covid period, according to an Anarock-FICCI survey. Meanwhile, demand for affordable homes has nosedived since Covid-19, initially because this segment’s target clientele was financially impacted by the pandemic. In the survey, at least 53 per cent homebuyers are dissatisfied with the currently available options in this vital segment across cities. “Of the dissatisfied affordable home seekers polled in our survey, a whopping 92 per cent respondents identify project location as the biggest grouse, while 84 per cent state low construction quality and inferior design elements as major deterrents. About 68 per cent respondents find the available unit sizes too small to be attractive,” said Anuj Puri, Chairman, Anarock Group. "Bigger homes continue to dominate buyer preferences despite spiralling prices in the last one year. City-wise analysis indicates that the demand for 3BHKs is particularly high in Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, and Bengaluru, where over 50 per cent respondents prefer it over other flat sizes. Conversely, over 40 per cent participants in Kolkata, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune name 2BHKs as their preferred option, said Puri. In terms of preferred stages of construction, the H1 2024 survey shows a significant trend reversal. The demand ratio of ready-to-move-in homes to new launches now stands at 20:25. In H1 2020, the ready-to-move to new launches demand ratio was 46:18. One major reason for this shift is that most homebuyers favour projects by large and listed developers, who they are confident will deliver their homes on time, the report mentioned. Mid-Day Premium Diwali 2024: Eco-friendly and DIY ideas to elevate your home décor

Vibrant lights brightening up the atmosphere, beautiful diyas lending charm to the festival, colourful rangolis at entrances inviting you inside, refreshing torans spreading the festive cheer – adorning homes with décor items is an essential part of Diwali that most people look forward to. It is not only an opportunity to transform your space but also to employ your creativity in the process.   While there are many traditional ways of decorating homes during festivals, adapting and innovating while staying true to traditions is key to maintaining the essence of the festival without causing harm to the environment. Festivities can have a significant environmental impact and it is our responsibility to minimise it with sustainable practices. “As we become more conscious of our environmental footprint, incorporating sustainability into our festive décor is both a mindful and beautiful way to celebrate Diwali 2024,” says Amrita Gupta, Chief Interior Designer & Director of Manglam Group.   Going sustainable with Diwali décor From using natural materials to opting for reusable items, there are many ways to elevate your home interiors sustainably. “Some simple yet impactful décor ideas bring in the spirit of Diwali while keeping sustainability at the forefront, proving that conscious design can be as beautiful as it is responsible,” believes interior designer Misbah Kapadia, founder and curator of Design Konstruct.   The experts share the following ideas to implement sustainable home décor choices:  Decorate your space with natural elements like handmade clay diyas, which not only bring warmth but also align with eco-conscious practices and support local artisans. Instead of artificial flowers, opt for real marigolds, jasmine and other seasonal blooms to bring in the freshness of nature. These are also compostable after use. You can also embrace reusable fabric décor such as handwoven table runners, cushion covers and wall hangings made from organic cotton or jute. These can be repurposed beyond the festive season, making them both stylish and eco-friendly. Sustainable candles are excellent alternatives to paraffin-based candles, providing a warm glow without harmful emissions. Additionally, investing in decor pieces that use reclaimed wood or recycled materials not only elevates your interiors but also contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle. Upcycled or reusable décor, such as brass or metal lanterns, can be filled with candles or fairy lights to add a soft, festive glow. You can also incorporate eco-friendly paints for wall art or rangoli designs.  Eco-friendly alternatives to common décor items Opting for a sustainable approach to Diwali décor does not mean letting go of items that have adorned your homes for years during Diwali. One can just innovate and choose eco-friendly alternatives to those décor pieces. Many such options can help create an equally festive yet environmentally conscious ambiance.   “Instead of plastic string lights, choose energy-efficient LED lights that consume far less electricity and last longer. These lights can be wrapped around windows, balconies or even in jars to create a warm and inviting glow,” suggests Gupta.   She continues, “Decorative bowls filled with organic spices, dried flowers or scented herbs can replace non-biodegradable décor items and add a lovely aroma to your home. Upcycled glass jars or wine bottles painted or decorated with ethnic patterns can serve as beautiful candle holders or vases, contributing to a rustic yet elegant feel.”   Switching to eco-friendly décor alternatives that also support local and sustainable craftsmanship is a special way to celebrate Diwali. Kapadia states, “Swap out plastic décor items for handcrafted pieces made from natural materials like wood, bamboo or clay. Terracotta diyas, for instance, not only add traditional charm but are also biodegradable. Choosing long-lasting, artisanal décor such as brass figurines or hand-painted pottery helps elevate your home’s aesthetic while supporting sustainable craftsmanship.”   Other eco-friendly swaps she suggests are: For rangolis, use dried flower petals, turmeric and rice flour instead of chemical-laden powders. Fabric banners and buntings made from leftover textiles are fantastic alternatives to single-use plastic streamers and can be stored for future festivals.   Do it yourself While all these eco-friendly items can easily be found in the market or may just be lying at your home, one way to lend character to these is to use your creativity. “One of the joys of celebrating Diwali is adding a personal touch to your home through DIY decor. There are many creative and simple ways to elevate your interiors using materials you already have at home,” says Gupta.    She suggests the following DIY ideas that you can use for your home:  You can create your own lanterns by wrapping leftover fabric or paper around mason jars or old containers and placing tea lights inside. These lanterns are perfect for lighting up entryways, balconies or even table centerpieces. Another easy DIY project is to create eco-friendly torans or door hangings using natural materials like coconut shells, dried orange slices or small terracotta ornaments. You can string these together with jute twine to create an authentic and sustainable decor piece. For a touch of elegance, use old sarees or dupattas to make drapes or decorative table runners, adding a traditional yet personal feel to your space. If you have children or enjoy crafting, try making hand-painted diyas or candles. Using non-toxic paints or natural dyes, you can create colourful and unique pieces to light up your home.  Not only are DIY Diwali décor ideas fun but also a great way to bond with loved ones. “DIY décor projects are creative, eco-friendly and perfect for involving the whole family in the festive preparations,” believes Kapadia. She gives the following ideas:  One easy DIY project is turning old glass jars or bottles into candle holders or vases. Wrap them with jute twine or paint them with eco-friendly paints for a festive look. For a natural touch, you can make your garlands using dried flowers, herbs or fabric scraps. These garlands are not only beautiful but can be reused each year. Another idea is to create your rangoli using organic powders or flower petals, adding a colourful, biodegradable element to your entrance. Hand painting terracotta diyas is another fun project that allows for customisation, and these can be reused year after year.

Real estate top investment choice for Indians, bigger homes in demand

Real estate remained the most preferred asset class for investment among 59 per cent of Indians in the first half this year, as 57 per cent of investors said they are buying premium properties to earn rental income, driven by surging rental rates in cities, according to a report on Friday. About 51 per cent of respondents prefer 3 BHK units, showing increased demand for larger home, as 67 per cent of buyers seek property for end use, while 33 per cent the investment purpose, said the report by FICCI and Anarock Property Consultants. The report highlighted significant shifts in homebuyer preferences and market dynamics in India's real estate sector. “Investor confidence is vital for the industry's long-term success, and SEBI’s focus on transparency and governance has been key in building this trust,” said Pramod Rao, Executive Director, SEBI. He emphasised that strong compliance and better disclosures will be crucial in attracting institutional investments. According to Sandip Somany, Past President, FICCI, the significant shift in consumer preferences away from ready-to-move homes towards under-construction properties indicates growing confidence in developers and the regulatory environment. The report found that the demand for ready homes has declined significantly. The ratio of ready homes to new launches is now 20:25, compared to 46:18 in the first half in 2020. The Rs 45-Rs 90 lakh budget remains the most popular, but there's a shift towards premium properties. About 28 per cent now prefer homes priced between Rs 90 lakh and Rs 1.5 crore. Apartments are still the most preferred property type (58 per cent), but residential plots are gaining popularity, especially in southern cities, the report mentioned. Top homebuyer demands are timely project completion (98 per cent), improved construction quality (93 per cent) and well-ventilated homes (72 per cent). However, over 53 per cent of homebuyers are dissatisfied with current affordable housing options, citing issues with location, construction quality and unit sizes. Anuj Puri, Chairman and Founder of Anarock Property Consultants, said that the survey provides all industry stakeholders with critical insights into the Indian property market from a consumer perspective. Online festive shopping: Affordable fashion, premium electronics fuel sales

As India kicked off online festive season sales, affordable fashion and premium electronics emerged as the top-performing categories, as private consumption surged especially in the rural parts of the country, a report showed on Thursday. The festive season sale in the first leg on various online e-commerce platforms reached over Rs 54,500 crore. From September 26 to October 6, unbranded and value segment in women’s apparel, daily-wear jewellery and kids’ fashion also saw significant growth, with a notable boost from tier 2 markets and beyond, according to the report by Redseer Strategy Consultants. Kushal Bhatnagar from Redseer said that e-commerce festive sales this year have shown dynamic growth patterns, building on the momentum from last year. “In 2023, the nine-day festive event saw approximately 19 per cent YoY growth over 2022. This was primarily driven by high average selling price (ASP) purchases such as mobiles, electronics and large appliances, contributing to about 67 per cent of the sales,” he noted. However, the 2024 festive season has been different. While the early phase followed a similar trend with high ASP products leading the charge, the latter half experienced strong demand for lower ASP items, particularly in fashion, which saw massive growth driven by ethnic wear and tier 2+ markets, the report noted. With increased participation from e-commerce platforms, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands and quick commerce players, consumer spending saw a remarkable surge. ACs, refrigerators and premium electronics are the main drivers of the growth. Extended summers and rising humidity levels have boosted demand for ACs and refrigerators, particularly in the under-penetrated regions, the report mentioned. Premium electronics like robotic vacuum cleaners and water purifiers have seen growth, particularly in Metro and Tier 1 cities, as consumers upgrade to life-comfort products. Premium TVs performed well too. “The broader mobile phone market experienced muted growth, but premium brands such as Apple continued to thrive. There was a noticeable shift of Android users to iOS, marking an interesting consumer trend,” the report noted. Quick commerce platforms saw an unexpected spike in mobile phone purchases, further emphasising the evolving role of these platforms. The beauty, grooming and home category saw an increase in the availability of low average selling price (ASP) items and new selections across various platforms, said the report.
