As we age our skin and body starts to show changes that are not always welcome. We spoke to Dr Amit Karkhanis - Medical Cosmetologist and Founder of Dr Tvacha Clinic to find out what changes a woman's skin and body goes through after the age of 40 and how she can reduce their appearance

As we start ageing, our bodies start adjusting to various changes- both skin and hair are affected by menopausal symptoms. Thinner eyebrows, broader face and forehead, fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, pigmentation, hollow cheeks and sallow complexion are a few of the facial changes you observe. Thinning hair, signs of dryness and damage are common too. Lower body weight gain is also observed due to fat disposition after the age of 35-40 years of age.

Most of us don't even realise these problems, but go back to your photos of 20 years ago, and see signs of ageing.

What tips would you give them to keep their skin flawless?

To keep your skin sublime and radiant, you must be regular with sunscreens and moisturisers from an early age. Regular use of products in early years maintains skin health. Develop a good skin care routine in consultation with a medical cosmetologist.

There are a variety of lasers to stimulate collagen production. Collagen is the protein that helps to improve the skin’s elasticity, and this is the key to looking youthful. Yellow laser/ fractional laser/ exilis laser and Recosma laser are effective to a great extent in terms of curbing pigmentation, acne marks and highly beneficial for skin rejuvenation and clearance. These lasers can also be started at any age to improve the conditions of the skin.

Anything that can be done to prevent/lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

The answer is really simple- if you go by the adage prevention is better than cure then, any exercise for 30 minutes a day, tweaking your eating habits to eat more greens and not eating after 7 pm, getting 7/8 hours of sleep per day, maintaining the right Body Mass Index and consuming plenty of water are the simple keys to great skin.

Along with a good skin care routine, you can try non-invasive treatments like fillers for under-eyes (tear trough), cheeks volumising, jaw-shaping, marionette lines,chin-shaping, etc; and botox for masseter (broad jaw), forehead lines and crows feet.

What can women do to reduce the appearance of spots and dark patches?

Spots and dark patches generally occur due to over exposure of hormonal changes in the body. Pigmentation may always seem to hamper our appearance, choice and we often seem to hesitate when it comes to wearing sleeveless tops or any other clothing which can possibly reveal the dark areas. Dr. Tvacha offers a the widest range of laser treatments in the country to clear spots and dark patches. It also offers a range of vitamin infusions and peels that make the skin reflect a healthy glow.

Do hormones play a role in the appearance of a woman’s skin? If so, what can be done about it?

Yes, Hormones do play a very important role on a woman’s skin. Think of your body as a symphony and hormones as the instrument. Those instruments must play together in sync. When even one is off balance, you begin developing problems including skin issues such as dryness, acne, fine lines and. wrinkles.

Conditions like PCOD also have their own impact on the skin. Hormones that prominently affect the skin are oestrogen, testosterone, thyroid hormones and one way to get these hormones balanced is to have a healthy diet and to get treated for any conditions, through prescribed medicines from the doctor.

Are there any treatments for unwanted facial hair?

The occurrence of facial hair can be troublesome. Facial hair is not only commonly seen in women over the age of 40, but it is also seen in women of any age.

Laser Hair Removal is very safe and common today and can be effective in hair reduction. You will need a probable 8 sittings, and the results are really good for the right candidate. 80% reduction of hair is the norm after 8 sittings. The thicker the hair and darker the hair, better the results always. The underlying hormonal problem if any also may be addressed simultaneously at the same time.
