Best known for his roles in shows like ‘Bairi Piya’, ‘Hamari Devrani’ ‘Encounter’, ‘Veera’, Sanjay Gagnani has also done films like ‘Rakhtbeej’ and ‘Heroine’. Today, on the occasion of ‘World Mental Health Day’, Mid-Day Online met up with him for an exclusive interview

Sanjay, have you ever struggled with any kind of clinically diagnosed mental health condition?  If so, will you be comfortable sharing your experience?
Even though I was not clinically diagnosed, I have been depressed and have had panic attacks and anxiety issues. I guess most of us do, during different phases of life when there are lows, hardships and difficulties. The only difference is that while some accept it, others refuse to accept.

What personal development efforts have you made to overcome your mental health issues?
As far as my personal development is concerned, I keep myself surrounded with family and friends. I love travelling and that’s why I tend to travel as and when time permits. I like to do everything make me feel happy from within.

How do you perceive mental health?
Mental health issues are something that needs to be addressed. Mental health issues are more dangerous than the most dangerous diseases. It’s an unseen disease, and hence, the most dangerous one. Everyone who feels sad, depressed and low, has to share their mental health issues with their loved ones.

These days, many people (young and old) are becoming victims day by day to the silent problem of mental health. Is there anything that you want to tell them?
Best medication is to have a conversation with family and friends. I would like to advice that, one has to do everything that makes a person happy. Even if that doesn’t work, one should consult an expert, who can hear you out and solve the issues.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?
My greatest achievement is my ability to be happy, feel content and satisfied. I compete only with myself. I always strive to make my family and well-wishers proud of me and my achievements.

How do you motivate yourself daily?
Every morning I wake up and think of my family, their sacrifices, their expectations and my responsibilities towards my family.
