Sookshmadarshini: CBFC introduces a disclaimer about violence against women

Those watching the Malayalam film, Sookshmadarshini, will notice a new disclaimer in a scene in the Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph-starrer. It reads, ‘Warning: Violence against women’. mid-day has learnt that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has introduced this disclaimer in scenes depicting any form of violence against women. It’s said to be the result of almost a year-long discussion  following the controversy sparked by Animal’s (2023) release.    Last December, Ravinder Bhakar was asked to step down as the CBFC CEO. Reportedly, one of the reasons behind his dismissal was that he cleared Animal with minimal cuts despite the excessive violence and misogynistic tone of the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer (Smarting from the Animal attack, Dec 19).  Stills from Animal   The new disclaimer is the CBFC’s attempt towards course correction. A censor board member, on condition of anonymity, told mid-day, “On its release, there was intense scrutiny over how Animal was granted certification with such ease. The decision to grant it an ‘A’ certificate was correct, but the discourse was that the objectionable scenes should have been omitted, particularly those depicting violence against women. At that time, we didn’t want to hamper the filmmaker’s creative agency, but the scenes had sparked discussion within the CBFC too. A course correction was long due. So, we have a new disclaimer that comes on screen whenever a sequence shows violence against women.” Sookshmadarshini, which was certified on November 12, is the first Indian film to carry the warning. The disclaimer features at the two-hour-18-minute point. A CBFC source tells us, “The scene is crucial to the story. So, a static warning was requested to be added. During The Apprentice, we had asked to reduce a scene that depicted sexual violence. But the filmmaker [Ali Abbasi] refused to do so. This is an alternative that respects the filmmakers’ agency, and at the same time, conveys that violence against women is wrong and not endorsed.” While the intention behind the warning is honest, it remains to be seen whether filmmakers will embrace it or argue that it compromises the viewing experience. When we reached out to a well-known female filmmaker, she said, on condition of anonymity, “The drinking and smoking disclaimers are jarring enough. There is a new one now! Films are a director’s medium, and the system needs to trust the creator. Imagine adding a disclaimer every time a man is beaten up in an action film!”

Mani Ratnam is not interested in making web series

Celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who adapted Kalki Krishnamurthy's Tamil novel "Ponniyin Selvan" into a two-part film saga, says Indian cinema could benefit by translating great literary works for screen. Ratnam said it doesn't get better if a director is able to reinvent a work by a master writer like Kalki. "The fantastic solution is to take literature and make it into films. Tamil is really rich in terms of the literature... Ideally, you'd like to write something that is far above what you do. It makes your job as a director easy... The closer the gap between literature and cinema, the better Indian cinema will be," the filmmaker said at a session on the fourth day of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here on Friday. Ratnam, who was in conversation with filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon, said he's currently reading Salman Rushdie's novel "Victory City", based on the early days of the Vijayanagar kingdom. "It's stunning, it's like watching a film. The way he (Rushdie) writes, the mixture between fiction, fact and history is so brilliant. It's amazing," he added. Asked if there was any literary character which was close to his real self, Ratnam said, "No one can come anywhere near me. I meant no one could be as confused (as me)." Ratnam, a seven-time National Award-winning artist, said he has always taken inspiration from mythology, be it films "Thalapathi", starring Rajinikanth, or "Ravanan" with Vikram. "Mythology is relevant even today. We can interpret it today, we can relate to it in today's day and time in our issues and problems that continues to fascinate me. If I can find a mirror image here, it pushes me to make it into a film," he added. Recalling his hostel days in Kala Kshetra, the filmmaker said every Friday students there had to attend the dance programme at the venue. "There was always Kathakali which I could never figure out. All of them (performances) dealt with characters which were portrayed as villains normally. "Whether it is Ravana or Karna (in 'Thalapathi'), it was an interesting interpretation which has always been there in South Indian art form. Seeing it from a different perspective." Ratnam also reflected on the use of visual effects (VFX) in cinema today, adding he shot "Ponniyin Selvan" on real locations because he wanted "dust, dirt and sweat" to be visible on people. "Some people do it in VFX. If you're happy with it, good luck to you. I feel VFX helps you when you can't do it in real time. Not the other way around," he added. Asked if "Ponniyin Selvan" could have been a web series, the director said he always imagined it as a full-feature film. He shot the movie in one go but released it in two parts. Ratnam said he wouldn't probably venture into making a web series as it doesn't feel "natural" to him. "Long format storytelling is a completely different art... I'm still very happy struggling with 2.5 hours (of runtime in films). If you give me 6-7 hours to make something, I'll just get lost." The filmmaker, also known for movies such as "Roja", "Bombay", "Dil Se", "Nayakan", and "Kaatru Veliyidai", said he wants his cinema to stand the test of time like Guru Dutt's "Pyaasa". "Something that stays relevant for years to come. That's what I strive for," he added. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Malayalam actress who accused Mukesh of rape withdraws complaint

A 51-year-old Malayalam actress who had levelled sexual abuse allegations against several male actors, including CPI(M) MLA M Mukesh, on Friday said she was not keen on pursuing her complaints due to "lack of support and protection from the Kerala government". The complainant also alleged "carelessness" on the part of the state government and said she was "mentally exhausted" and therefore, not keen on taking the complaints forward. "I would like to tell everyone that due to the government's carelessness and lack of protection for a woman who has come forward like this, I have suffered more than I can handle. I am mentally exhausted. They are not helping or protecting a woman. "Therefore, I do not want to pursue the cases. It is not because I have compromised with anyone," she told reporters. She claimed she was made an accused in a POCSO case following her complaints against the actors, also including Maniyanpilla Raju and Idavela Babu, and the government did nothing to protect her. "I am innocent. I want justice. I want the POCSO case against me to be probed thoroughly and quickly. If I commit suicide, the government will be responsible for it," she said. Later in the day, she reiterated in a Facebook post what she told reporters in the morning. In the social media post, the woman actor said, "Today, I am planning to make the difficult decision to revoke all cases, including those against MLA, due to the lack of justice in my POCSO case." "Despite my pleas, the police failed to thoroughly investigate, leaving me feeling helpless and betrayed."She further claimed that she was the target of "relentless social bullying" which has taken "a devastating toll" on her mental health as malicious rumours labelled her as a mediator of the sex mafia. "I am standing firm, refusing to be silenced. My demand is clear: resolve the POCSO case first, then I'll proceed with the other cases. Justice must be served. I urge the authorities to take immediate action, ensuring no one else suffers as I have. The POCSO Act 2012 is in place to protect our children. It is time to see it upheld," she said in her post. The Muvattupuzha police had registered the case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, against the woman actor based on a complaint lodged by her relative. According to the police, the incident occurred in 2014. The complainant has alleged she was a minor at the time of the incident and that the actor was running a sex racket. She has alleged the woman actor was running a sex racket and had taken her to Chennai for a film audition where she was presented before many people for sexual favours. The actor had vehemently denied the allegations and claimed that the woman relative owed her some money, and these allegations were to shift attention from her complaint against the high-profile actors. The actress' allegations against the cinema industry professionals came in the wake of the disclosure of the Justice Hema Committee report which revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry, prompting calls for action against the guilty. The Justice Hema Committee was constituted by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case. The complete report was placed before the Kerala High Court which directed that it be handed over to the special investigation team (SIT) that was constituted to probe complaints of sexual abuse in the film industry. Subsequently, 26 FIRs were registered by the SIT in connection with the revelations in the report.

Sobhita’s parents were clear about wanting to include all the rituals, and I was completely on board. I find the chants and ceremonies so soothing — they bring a sense of peace. It’s going to be a lovely wedding, simple and heartfelt, just like the couple.”
