Legendary actor Meryl Streep was awarded an honorary Palme d'Or during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. She noted that the last time she was at Cannes, she was about to turn 40 and was a mother of three. "I thought that my career was over -- and that was not an unrealistic expectation for actresses at that time," said Streep. Known for multi-layered performances in a wide variety of films spanning nearly a half-century, here's looking at some of her best films. 


The Devil Wears Prada 


Released on June 30, 2006, the dramedy 'The Devil Wears Prada' is based on the novel of the same name written by author Lauren Weisberger. the story revolves around an aspiring journalist Andy Sachs played by Hathaway who to set her footing in the world of publishing, takes up a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly aka Meryl Streep, a ruthless editor of a fashion magazine. However, over some time, Sach learns about how cutthroat and cruel the fashion industry can be as well as the numerous sacrifices people make so that they can reach the top.


Julie & Julia

'Julie & Julia,' starring Meryl Streep as Child and Amy Adams as Powell, was based on the food blogger's journey and jumped back and forth from the 1950s to the early 2000s. For her work, Streep received a nomination for Best Actress at the 82nd Academy Awards. 

The Post 

Steven Spielberg's 'The Post' (2017) is a thrilling drama featuring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in the lead roles. The film revolves around a story of dedicated journalists - a publisher, her editor, and a newsroom striving to join the ranks of the best in the country - taking a stand for the truth, justice and the American public's right to be informed.

Kramer Vs Kramer 

In the 1979 legal drama, Meryl played the role of a troubled mother who walks out on her husband and son after she believes in being unfit as a stay-at-home mother. However, months later she returns demanding full custody which kickstarts a legal battle giving the film's title. In the months that she left her husband and son - the two form a great bond while Meryl's character evolves as she embarks on living independently and seeking help. The film was ahead of its time and shed light on gender roles, work-life balance, and divorce battles affecting kids. 

Evil Angels

Also known as 'A Cry In The Dark', this 1989 film got Meryl her first Best Actress award at Cannes Film Festival. She also received an Academy Award nomination. The film is based on  John Bryson's 1985 book of the same name, which revolves around the disappearance of a 9-week-old baby from a campground and how her death leads to the parents becoming suspects, who try to prove their innocence. 

The Iron Lady 

Those who have binge-watched ‘The Crown’ know how important character was British politician Margaret Thatcher, who was the longest-serving Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the first woman in office. Meryl embodied the role brilliantly, which earned her third Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
