The Broadcast Film Critics Association confirmed that JJ Abrams's blockbuster sequel will join ten other films competing for the prize, reported Digital Spy.
In a press statement, the BFCA cited as responsible for the change an "unprecedented outcry" from its members who hadn't seen 'The Force Awakens' before voting.
Last week, award show organisers first hinted that a late addition of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to the nominations was technically possible.
Also up for Best Picture are 'The Big Short', 'Bridge of Spies', 'Brooklyn', 'Carol', 'Mad Max: Fury Road', 'The Martian', 'The Revenant', 'Room', 'Sicario' and 'Spotlight'.
TJ Miller will host the 21st Critics' Choice Awards, airing on January 17, 2016.
