Still from Piku

Irrfan Khan, who passed away in 2020, has left his mark behind with incredible films to his credit. A couple of months back, at the book launch of 'Irrfan Khan: A Life in Movie' by film critic Shubhra Gupta, the actors wife Sutapa Sikdar spoke about how Irrfan would improvise certain scenes in movies. At the launch event, Sutapa recalled the time Irrfan improvised a scene in the 2015 film 'Piku' directed by Shoojit Sircar. She said that it bother Amitabh Bachchan but later on, they became friends and all was fine.

Sutapa said, “Irrfan would work along with the director and the writer. They would have many drafts by the end of it and when he would go on stage, he would kind of improvise. He would never improvise to take the limelight, but he would try to break the language in a way.”

Sutapa also recalled having a conversation with director Shoojit Sircar. Shoojit told Sutapa, “Bachchan saab is very structured and really prepared when he comes and Irrfan improvised and he got really upset. Then they became friends.”

Sutapa also shared that the whole interval scene that had left everyone impressed was improvised. Adding to it, Shubra Gupta said, "Shoojit said he did not have the courage to cut it.” Shubhra also recalled that Shoojit once said, “When I was directing Irrfan [on the set of] Piku, I would sometimes even be afraid of saying ‘Cut’”. The interval scenes had Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan, and Deepika Padukone get into a heated argument when they get stuck on a highway.

Irrfan Khan took his last breath on April 29, 2020. The actor was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour and succumbed to colon infection. His last film to release in theatres before his demise was 'Angrezi Medium' for which he had shot between his treatment.  Directed by Homi Adajania , the film also starred Radhika Madan and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Irrfan's last theatrical was 'The Song of Scorpion' which was released in April this year. Set within the deep desert landscapes of rural Rajasthan, the film features Irrfan along with Golshifteh Farahani (About Elly fame) in the lead role along with a cameo by the legendary actress Waheeda Rehman.
