Nine years after playing Gujarati lover boy in Ram-Leela, Singh discusses applying his learnings in Jayeshbhai Jordaar

The film’s first look

After a smashing debut with Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), Ranveer Singh hit the big league with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic saga, Ram-Leela (2013). Nine years on, the actor is set to play a Gujarati character again in Jayeshbhai Jordaar. A far cry from the boisterous lover of Bhansali’s film, Singh will be seen as a small-time Gujarat-based businessman in the Divyang Thakkar-directed venture. “I’m playing a Gujarati man again after Ram-Leela, a film that gave me the [standing] of a star in this industry. Ram-Leela made people shower me with love. Even now, when I meet people from the community, they mention how they loved my performance in the film,” he shares.

Bhansali is known to be a taskmaster who makes his actors become one with the character. Singh acknowledges that he walked into Jayeshbhai Jordaar better prepared, thanks to the training that he had undergone on Bhansali’s project. From understanding the milieu to perfecting the diction, the actor has tried to be as authentic as possible to the character and its universe. “I love everything about Gujarat — its culture, its vibrancy, and most importantly, its people. So, I was inspired to become a Gujarati man. I hope the community loves the film and my performance.” The social comedy marks the Bollywood debut of Shalini Pandey of Arjun Reddy (2017) fame.
