Akshay attempts his first political drama with Richa-starrer Madam Chief Minister
Akshay Oberoi
Akshay Oberoi’s latest release, Madam Chief Minister, sees him play the romantic interest-turned-rival to Richa Chadha’s protagonist. He says that the drama, centred on the protagonist’s rise in the murky world of politics, was an unfamiliar territory for him. “I am not as well-versed in politics as Subhash Kapoor [director] and Richa are. So, I had to do a considerable amount of homework. When I was younger, I used to see heated conversations on politics and that turned me off. But now that I am older, I take a keen interest in the [subject]. That said, I stay away from toxic debates,” says the actor.

Even though the footfall at cinemas has been abysmal, the makers chose a theatrical release for the film. While Oberoi describes it as their mark of support to exhibitors, he understands the audience’s hesitation to step into a movie hall. “[In the current circumstances], I won’t unnecessarily pressure people to watch films in theatres. Cinemas are in trouble, and every industry needs a push at this point. But each viewer needs to make [an informed] decision for himself.”
