It looks like Deepa Mehta has a new fan in none other than Hollywood star Tom Hanks. So much so that Hanks was left utterly disappointed after he missed watching the filmmaker’s new project at the recently concluded Toronto International Film Festival.

Last week, Tom Hanks was present at the festival for the premiere of his forthcoming movie. He attended the show along with his fellow co-stars Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant. However, he couldn’t catch the screening of Deepa’s film, which was to be showcased at the same event a day later.

Our source present at the event says, “Directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer, Hanks’ next was getting screened on Saturday and the Mehta’s was scheduled for Sunday. Unfortunately, the actor had to catch an early morning flight to attend to some prior commitments. As the result, he couldn’t wait for the show.”u00a0Apparently, the Hollywood actor was excited to watch the Canada-based director’s film because like his, her project too is a screen adaptation of a complex novel.u00a0

Tom’s film is based on David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas that deals with reincarnation and chronicles six time periods stretching from the 19th and 20th centuries to the distant future. On the other hand, Mehta’s film is adapted from Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children and covers India’s transition from British colonialism to independence and the eventual partition of India.u00a0Tom says, “I know how extremely difficult it is to bring to life a mammoth and a complicated project like Cloud Atlas and Midnight’s Children. I would have loved to see how Deepa has dealt with such a challenging story by Rushdie.”u00a0
